Not coming to the UK, wish it was though... slighter better options for men than the soft top in my opinion.

That was in 2004 though, that shape MX5 has long since been superceded.

ETA besides, its easy enough just to buy an MX5 and put a hard top on if you really don't want a convertible (but I can't see why you wouldn't!)

Personally i'm not a fan off the looks of the mx-5 as a convertibale.. I know this will probabaly comne across some strong opposition here, but generally im not a fan of any convertables... perhaps the A4 is one accpetion.. anyway, came across a photo of the couple today and rather liked it.

Now, you had some sympathy here until you cited the A4 convertible as an exception. That or an Alfa 8C Spider? Hmm. scratchchin

While I agree cars often look better in fixed head form (and sometime drive better) the fact remains there's something very special about having the wind in your hair. Driving - particularly if you're being vaguely law abiding - is as much about the sensations it delivers as simply whitening your knuckles. Everything is excentuated in an open car - the noise, the interaction with your environment and even the sensation of speed.

So in summary I'd like something with the looks and torsional rigidity of a coupe, but the visceral high of a convertible please. smile

I'd have had a coupe had they sold it here. I really don't like convertibles.

This is so true, i find myself often driving slower and still enjoying myself more with the roof down. It's hard to get that enjoyment level at legal speeds in cars that you can't drop the top. On a day like we have been having recently almost every journey is an absolute joy with the roof down. It just feels like a purer form of driving, wind in your hair, hearing the exhaust so much clearer, love it.

I agree the mx5 looks better and probbaly drives better as a coupe, but the mx5 is really all about those special journeys nipping around with the top down IMO.

I would have preferred it as a shooting brake/breadvan type thing. It's just a soft-top with a hard roof in terms of the shape.

Seeing as I have never owned a converitiable it looks as though I will have to get passed my preferred styling of a fixed head and buy myself a soft top so I can experience it for myself!

yes

When I first bought an MX5 having never driven a convertible I thought I'd generally leave the roof up (or buy a hard top) and just enjoy the handling. I was wrong, its so much more fun with the roof down! Sunburn can be an issue though wink

I can echo these statements, looking for a new car atm, would like an mx-5. Test drove 2 on saturday and I dont think I've stepped out of a car smilling as much. The weather was perfect, the roads just around the corner from the dealer were great and the cars were superb. On the strength of that I put a deposit down there and then. Just need to sell my car now frown Please someone buy it!!

I liked the look of the normal MX5 with both the hard top fitted and the appeal of driving a proper convertible. I would consider another MX5 in coupe form if you could buy a production version though. They look superb and really would have sold well I think.

You're on dangerous ground calling the MX-5 a girls car on here chris. HaHa. Do like the coupe though.

Careful J, I never said it was a girls car... just thatthe coupe would have given men (also women) another choice.

All this talk of MX-5, soft or hard top, is making me want one
