It'll be stopped off of your holiday allowance!

I don't care if it's a Volcano.
My O/H flew out to Miami last week with work for an international company conference, basically once every couple of years they get key people from all the global offices togeather in one place for a few days on what is in reality a bit of a jolly. Anyway it obviously all went mammories skyward and most of the European offices people are still stuck there, in her case she's flying upto NY today where her big boss (as in the American CEO) has said she'll be expected to work from the New Jersey office until her flight back hopefully thur/fri the Newark-LHR route was her quickest way home with Virgin, however some of the others have had to stay in Miami as for them the quickest way was to stay there.
But this is where the big boss has excelled himself, she's ok as she'll officially be working but for the ones in Miami he's said the time will be stopped off of their holiday allowances!!!! he's also done his nut about the levels of expenses being run up and is making noises about they won't be able to claim them all back as it's not the companies fault. I can see it getting messy but I guess it's the problem of working for a privately owned international company where the big boss is the owner and shall we say a little legendary for his tightness, profits are good and for them it's been a good year, the boss was in the UK for 2 years up till last year so she knows him well, but the man is loaded enough that when he went back to the US he sold his house in Surrey to one of the Chelsea players. Without being too stereotypical about his culture, shall we just say he should have been a Tottenham fan! But he really is showing very little compassion on this one.

Telling people that they will only be allowed a £$35 p.d. subsistance allowance and the equivelent of the room rate for a single at the Best Western near the airport i can see, stops anyone taking the Michael.
Telling them to take it out of their holiday allowance? No amount of Sugar would sweeten that pill and that is out of order IMO. One assumes that they have no internet and/or telephone and that those who don't already have their computerrs with them can't afford to buy one (I am assuming here we are not exactly talking about £25kpa employees...)

umm am I the only one who thinks that the fact she is working in New York and the others are sunning themselves in Florida means that they should be taking it from there holiday allowance. If they were all ready and willing to work and there was not the ability to do so then fair enough but they have the option to work, they choose the beach.
nothing out of line in my opinion.

They can't tell somebody when to take holidays especially if they are in the position they are at the companies request.
However any company would be mad not to impose limits to expenses in such circumstances.
This. You can't be told when to take holiday, they didn't ask to be there, company is out of order and should at least help out. Don't think I'd be there much longer to be honest. However any company would be mad not to impose limits to expenses in such circumstances.
Rude-boy, whats wrong with £25k/annum employees?
The firm should have travel insurance to cover this stuff.
As to needing to take annual leave? If you've got 27 days paid and are about to lie on a beach sipping pina coladas is that so unfair? If they want to work and can do so remotely they shouldn't have to take the time off, though...

27? this is an american company we're talking about 27 would be luxury, they get the minimum they can which I think is 21, for most people they will already have penciled in an idea of the years holiday, i.e a week at christmas, 2 in the summer, a few odd days here and there. They don't have the ability to work remotely unless like my O/H they can get into an office, they are simply stuck in the Holiday Inn Miami Airport waiting, Pina Coladas on the beach would be nice but it was chucking it down in Miami all day yesterday As to needing to take annual leave? If you've got 27 days paid and are about to lie on a beach sipping pina coladas is that so unfair? If they want to work and can do so remotely they shouldn't have to take the time off, though...
