You are looking at a fail from the start. Public sector working will not change as it is set up to be the way it is inept. You cannot and will not change the working attitude as they are not paid to work they are simply paid to turn up and spend as little time at the office as possible.

That's not always the case in the public sector. You're right though that there isn't the "more work makes a better worker" mentality that there is in the private sector. There's a recognition that someone working 12 hour days may just be drowning under the same workload as their colleague who manages it on 9-5.

The motivation and pursuit of improvement is very much dependent on the management though. I work in a public sector job, and it's far more quality and efficiency oriented than any private sector job I've had before. The culture is all the way through, and is pushed very hard by management. Anyone just free-wheeling is very obvious and they usually don't last long.

p.s., you haven't gone to UCAS have you?

Thanks for reading. I'm not willing to "adapt" (a.k.a. be assimilated) because that would require choosing to be slovenly and thus losing the spark and innovation that I know it is possible to have in the workplace. Will have a think...

Don't let this current organisation put you off public service. Believe it or not, they are not all like that.

I have also seen the other side of resistance to change where things are constantly changing and nobody gets to settle down and do the actual work effectivly. You are busy trying to get used to a new process or system and then along comes another one (which is usually worse).
