Juddering in 1st gear.

Over the last few weeks I've noticed an increasing sensation of juddering when pulling away in 1st. It's not in any other gear. The clutch fluid level is fine. I can get round it by using more(lots) revs than normal but can't see it being a long term solution.

It got the point on the weekend that I was pulling away in second when stuck in traffic for ages.

Any ideas or advice on things I can check would be greatly appreciated.

Oil on clutch plate or knackered engine/gearbox mounts would be my suspects...

Thanks fellas. I bought new engine mounts last year to cure a problem with the starter motor knocking on the chassis, but that went away so I left the job for the winter....

At least I've got light and warmth to work in now the garage has been finished!

I've had the same problem for the last two years, had the engine and gearbox mounts replaced and still no change. It only happens when stood for a long time in traffic when the engine heats up. I had the same problem with a Scimitar and that was due to cracks in the clutch plate which was a known problem. I'm going to replace the clutch plate when it gets too bad to cope with, but I'll just live with it at the moment and if I give it enough revs it is fine

For some reason I also get exactly the same symptoms at the same time, all other times it is fine !!!

I think the reason for this is that the clutch plate heats up and the cracks expand slightly giving the juddering effect

Hmmmm, the car was fitted with a new clutch and release arm about 6k ago so I'd be surprised if it was that. But then again it does seems to happen more in traffic when it gets hotter.

I'll live with it for now, avoid traffic jams, fix the other niggles/leaks/rattles and look to change the mounts next winter. On that note, would it be worth changing the gearbox mounts at the same time? Is it just as 'challenging'?

Gearbox mount is much easier.
Undo all bolts
Jack up GB
Pop in new mount
Do up all bolts.

But.
My GB mount was completely goosed and I didn't have the problems you are reporting.

ok you might want to try this.
I had same problem with my old 320 beemer, was terrible when stuck in traffic as the clutch got hotter.
Garage told me it was the fly wheel being warped etc.
The advice i had from a fellow BM driver was, glazing of the clutch plate and flywheel caused by excessive riding of the clutch over many years.
Anyway the solution, 5k revs and dump the clutch hard, so a few racing starts. Sorted the beemer out.
If your clutch dissintegrates it was obviously on the way out anyhow.

I recently wanted to change my gearbox mount while my exhaust was off over the winter, couldn,t find one anywhere,they are like hens teeth

Plenty on Ebay, ford Capri/Escort etc etc........
