Hi all

I inherited a laptopp from an uncle. he says it doesnt work and he was going to throw it away.

Its a Acer Aspire 7520 running Vista, when i first got it, it would get past the Acer screen (where you can go into the BIOS or run the Boot menu) then it would come up woth a message about Checksums? So i formatted the HD and popped it back in the machine, i dont have a Vista disc so i put in a XP disc and started the installation process.

It goes though the normal process of setting up windows - blue screen with Windows setup written on the top and in the white bar at the bottom it says 'Setup is loading files'. Then after a while the writing at the bottom says 'Setup is Starting Windows'. At this point i get another blue screen that displays a message, the basics are:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first tim youy have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps.

Check viruses, remove new HD'd, run CHKDSK /F and some other stuff

Technical Information:

  • *STOP:OXOOOOOO7B (0XF79AE524, OXC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

Any ideas or shall i just strip it for parts?

It's got a SATA hard drive which the XP install disk doesn't have the drivers for.

You will need to grab the Acer drivers off of their website and follow these instructions (obviously using the Acer drivers not the Intel ones)

In the BIOS is the SATA operation set to ATA or AHCI/IRRT as I've had issues with XP in these other modes.

I cant change anything in the BIOS apart from the Time, Date, Video memory and boot order.....

Should there be more options?

Yep, I've seen that a few times too. You can always change it back when you've finished installing Windows.

Generally yes, but I don't have much experience of Acer.

There really are no more than very basic options in the BIOS, strange. I will be getting a Vista disc of my brother and try that, maybe i will have better luck.

There's probably a recovery partition you can boot in to that will restore Vista.

Might be ALT-F12 during the Acer screen to get to it.

You could always try installing something like Ubuntu on it.

Not even if you press the left or right key??

My sisters Acer laptop a few years ago had more than one menu screen in the BIOS.

Try booting of a cd runtime, just to see if its stable, like a linux live disk or something.

Normally ALT + F10 during startup will get you into recovery mode, so long as the hard drive is OK.

The OP said he reformatted the HDD so any recovery partition that was there has more than likely gone now.

Thanks for the replys, but i formatted the HDD, its all gone, just a blank drive. I should have a Vista disc in the next few days so i will try that.

I have been reading about some HDD not liking XP (thats what i have been trying to install), something to do with the RAID or SCSI drivers. My ATA HDD is fine with XP but bth my SATA drives dont like it....

So..... i have a Vista disc now, tried to install it on the laptop. It gets past the Acer screen and i can hear the disc spinning up then all i get is a black screen with the following message:

'The file is possibly corrupt. The file header checksumdoes not match the computer (1 word i cant see but ends in 'ed') checksum.

The mystery continues

you should try this, it will give you a good idea if the laptop has any chance of working.

If it will run fine when booting an OS from CD then it is likely to be the hard disk at fault

Hi all

For those of you who may be interested, the problem was the hard disc.

After few days of playing around and getting different stages of the install process i chucked in my old PS3 HDD and bang! Worked straight away, cheers chaps.
