A few quid for some rocker cover gaskets and an hour of your time - it ain't hard.

Although..... wasn't there talk of the later cars having self-adjusting hydraulic tappets... www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=56651&f=11&h=0&hw=hydraulic

I have a feeling that all the catalyzed S3/S4's have hydraulic tappets. These also have adjusters which should not be touched. Check with a specialist.

RoyC you are absolutely right. The point is you can't tell just by looking - the hydraulic tappet box is on the BOTTOM of the push rod, ie against the cam in the Vee of the engine - the rocker gear itself, under the rocker covers, is exactly the same as non-cat cars.

I tried to adjust mine, but knackered them and had to reset them.

If you are sure that the tappets are noisy, then it sound like you have a dodgy tappet itself, which needs more than just an adjustment, I'm afraid...

Check carefuly where the noise is coming from, either with a stethoscope or a metal bar, like a socket extension etc, between the engine and your ear (and not near any spark plug leads, because 50kV through the brainbox isn't good for anybody!)
