slightly random qn: why don't hyundai's look like ferraris?
Discussion
Hi folks,
Bear with me on this one!
I was sat behind a hyundai coupe at the lights the other day, I thought that it had overtones of a 355 - very distant ones, but definitely overtones!
.. one of these...
Anyhow, it got me thinking, a 355 has a really striking presence, the hyundai obviously doesn't, and the geek in me was trying to deconstruct precisely why. I guess that the coupe's wheels were too small, and the car was too high and narrow, but I wondered why/if these things were expensive to do at design time.
i.e, basically, even if you don't put a nut-case engine in the car, does it cost a huge amount more to build something that looks the part. I'm assuming that the reason is that the hydundai uses lots of more mainstream parts, whereas the 355 uses very custom ones, but I'm interesting in opinions.

I've often wondered this myself - surely it doesn't cost all that much more to design something that *looks* fantastic and once the factory is tooled up to make it it doesn't cost any more surely?
The Hyundai coupe is a good example - the body panels etc are no less complex than, for example, an Aston Martian in shape.

I think its more simple than that
simply put - if you see a car every day, it ceases being amazing\head turning to look at. Think about any mainstream car that's been out for ages - all very 'meh' - then think of the citroes C6, smart roadster, renault avantime - all rare - but cheap, all turn heads
that's my thought anyway - I mean the fezza california looks pretty similar to a mr2

Exactly see so many R8's around town I actually dont bother looking at them any more.simply put - if you see a car every day, it ceases being amazing\head turning to look at. Yeah, maybe it is more that, thinking about it. Ive thought about this sorta principle at times before, i.e if Hyundai built an exact DB9 say the year before Aston launched it, put a Hyundai badge on the the Hyundai DB9 and still gave it the huge tyres/brakes etc so externally it would be an exact copy, would we all still be like wow when we see them and wouldnt the sell loads if they priced it at say 20k. I just dont think its that simple but cant fully explain it.
Why dont Kia/Daewoo/Hyundai/Tata etc etc build an executive saloon that will rival the E class or 5 series. They just dont, they always build saloons that dont looks agressive or sporty and just look sorta big and cheap, but yet the Germans get it right every time, A6, 5 series, E Class etc all look to styled pin sharp and look distinguished. Im not gonna argue with people who think the new 5 series is crap etc etc because my point about how we percieve the Germans is more complex me thinks. Even if the Germans has plastic interiors and woeful engines their shape still looks classy.
I think there is a link then to a Car makers range toppers, say with the Koreans, their Mega Saloon probably tops out with 2.5 V6 petrol and thats as far as you go. But with the Europeans and other alleged "quality" manufacturers, you have cars like the M5, S6 etc which cost a fortune but have the same basic shape as your new 2.O turbo diesel version. The more expensive and rare the car, the more we see it as having the wow factor and it probably links to how we want the neighbours to see us etc.
As someone else pointed out the RX 8 is probably a very good design excercise but because its Mazda who mostly make Japanese saloons then you dont blink an eye at them, but if they were called Bugatti mini Veyrons and cost say half a million we would all want one.
Ive often thought why dont the Koreans just head hunt the Germans stylists and produce the goods but it has never yet happened. Its not that hard, just pay em twice the salary and get cracking! I know some of the Italian style houses have probably been subbed in over the years but why is it the only produce crap desigins for the cheap manufacturers?
It all seems so simple to me but it doesnt equate into reality?

Can you tell if a car is FWD just by looking at it? Genius.

HINT: Long bonnet = Good chance of being Longitudinally engined and usually RWD

Hyundai already have an ex-Audi designer, and the Hyundai Matrix was done by Pinifarina. It all seems so simple to me but it doesnt equate into reality?

Phwoar.

Not bad, slap an upmarket badge on that and watch it sell. Not sold on the front end just yet but at least it's exciting.
A few of the new Kia cars look good, they're breaking away from the cheap A to B cars of old and producing cars with a good deal of style coupled with quality and low prices. They're yet to make something nuts, but I think they might try and tap into the hot-hatch market at least.
