FFS. Do we really have such incompetence in the NHS?
You don't want to read the story of the surgeon who removed a little girl's bladder instead of a hernia.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1252913/Su...
Sounds like a dodgy doc and fits in well with the current government immigration policy.
Don't get me wrong - I run a medical company employing mostly foreign doctors because British doctors are not interested to do the jobs - problem is that the NHS cannot recruit based on merit- has to be EU candidates first.
I have even seen senior NHS HR advice (ie central from high up in the NHS) advising local NHS HR not to bother short listing doctors who may require a work permit because its too much paperwork, etc.
Because of daft and rushed through immigration changes, bottom line is that there is a huge shortage of experienced doctors across the UK mainly in the acute specialities so that the NHS is now appointing people who 3 years ago would never have got near to be shortlisted. End of.
This is also tied in to the General Medical Council who caved into the governments's demand to introduce the legislation that prevents them testing EU doctor's language skills -they say their hands are tied but in reality they tied them own hands and then blamed the EU.
Since 2004, your right to practice medicine in the UK is determined by your passport and not your qualifications etc. it gets more crazy, for example, a British doctor qualified in South Africa will have to write medical entrance exams (PLAB) to practice here whereas a German doctor qualifying from the same university does not. EU rights until you are British, I kid you not as we have had this exact scenario.
Oh and by the way, it's getting worse and will continue to do so.....rant over
PS if you think MP expenses are shocking, wait until you see the GMC council, £600K expenses paid to one member with no receipts a few years ago which is one of the reasons they remain a charity, less onerous financial reporting me thinks or am I just too cynical

The GMC was told of another incident in August 2006, when Dr Al Hourani had consulted a colleague and was advised to inject a patient with 10 milligrams (mg) of midazolam, a powerful sedative drug.
He then gave the patient 8mg and injected himself with the other 2mg, the hearing was told.
I can't put my finger on it, but something about imagining that situation makes me giggle uncontrollably. He then gave the patient 8mg and injected himself with the other 2mg, the hearing was told.

I'd be pissed to say the least. Hope he gets a big pay out.
I thought that... but what's a suitable payout? I can't think what sum I'd be satisfied with. How about 5 minutes with the surgeon in a sound proof room and a scalpel?Gassing Station | News, Politics & Economics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
