Airvideo... Greatest app ever...
Discussion
OK, so this is just a silly little post, but I had to post it because I have discovered by far the greatest app on iTunes. Granted, I am probably the last to discover this absolute f
king gem, HOWEVER, that does not stop me getting all excited.
So, Air video... http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/air-video-watch-you...
I have nothing to do with this company, or the people who made it, by the way, I just think that THIS is one of the apps that makes the iPod, iPhone, and now the iPad absolute f
king gems!
Basically, Air Movie allows you to stream video from any number of servers. In this sscreen grab you can see I have mine set up for my 2 macs. The VERY cool thing is that I can set them up for local access, as well as remote access.

The top 2 are obviously local addresses on my network. However, the bottom 2 are set up for remote access off site. So, for example, you were off on a jolly in another part of the country at a friends, or work at a hotel, etc, you could then access youe movies/videos with just the internet connection, and your ipod/iphone/ipad.
The setup is a friggin doddle. You simply go to remote in the settings tab, check the box, and it will give you a passcode, (just make sure you have a password).

To access folders, it is very much like sorting out your shared folders on the PC/Mac. Download the server software to the computer, and on that you will simply choose which folder, and all the folders/files inside will be accessible. I picked my iTunes folder, which gives me access to the movies, as well as the TV shows, and I gave myself access to an external I have where I store all the other films I have. You have to download this software on each computer you want to access.

Once you have that set up, you simply connect, by clicking the appropriate server, and it will connect, giving you your file structure.

When you pick a film, you will see this screen. One of the best features with this software is that like some PS3 streaming software, etc, this one can transcode on the fly, which means you don't need a particular format to play. You simply touch 'play with live conversion' if it won't play natively.

The picture is pretty good quality. I tested it using a friends wifi connection and the picture quality is superb!

Anyway, I can't say how freakin sweet this app is. There is a free version which has limits on the number of files viewable, or something, but the app itself is $2.99, and will work on iPod and iPad.

Orb is a smart bit of kit.
Been using it for a good few years.
Just downloaded the software, and it's indexing, (which may take some time, as I have close to 400 flicks on my external! The web portal looks fussy.Been using it for a good few years.
Meh... Just discovered that it doesn't want to add an external drive. It is trying to index the entire macbook user folder. Hmmm
