I was staying at the Travelodge last night for work, came across a guy with a Laguna Seca E46 Cab that had SMG failure - he'd been dropped off by the RAC, awaiting another RAC to take him the rest of his journey (didnt realise they worked in zones for recovery?)

Did pop over once settled in my room and have a chat - dam nice car, had the full ACS kit and apparently remapped to 390+ BHP?

Tried to offer assistance with "have you looked at the bonnet sensor?" type stuff but I think that was teaching him to suck eggs

If you're on here chap I hope you made it home in good time and the repair is cheap and easy!

yes

Hopefully it was nothing serious.

Have to raise the question though .... Remap to 390bhp? Just software?

Standard is 343bhp so 390bhp does not sound that crazy.

People chip Audi tt 225 to 265 and thats about 40bhp.

Granted the TT uses a turbo...

could be possible to get 390! I don't think i would want to blow up a 3.2 M3 engine by increasing the bhp by such an amount... benefits vs. cost of replacment of engine is not worth it!

The M engine is already comfortably over 100bhp/litre. There are only a handful of NA car engines that manage that kind of specific output. Going to over 120bhp/litre in a road car, with little more than some electronic trickery seems highly unlikely.
