Sad state of affairs.

The government wont be happy til they have a camera on your head and a GPS up your arse, so they know what your doing and where your doing it.

Trials are currently underway of a new average-speed system called 'SpeedSpike', which combines GPS with numberplate recognition technology. It also records images of both vehicles and drivers.

Well I guess all that 'stupid paranoia' was justified after all then, who'd have thought it.

No point, the EU system will be up in a few years, and one of its objectives was to explore the possibility of charging users per mile. It doesnt take a great leap from there to assume that they will have speed detection as well.

The charging per mile thing really fks me off. I have to travel 50 miles each way to work to be able to earn a decent wage at a decent company (probably could find closer, but not for such a good company). This will give me the choice of being shafted by either the government or get a new job at a worse company. fking ing st-headed dicks, to put it politely.

Pay-per-mile is going to restrict the movement of the masses. This is Big Brother at it's worse.

Once installed, there would be nothing stopping them from putting the road toll up....just like with teh fuel duty.

It wouldn't even take any consideration......I'd be outa here if this gets announced. Wouldn't care where I go........or if the country is less developed.....it certainly wouldn't be the surveillance state that Britain has become.

What's amazing is, the more camera's there seem to be, the worse this country gets! So it's not like the camera's are actually 'helping' to protect he citizens.

There is always the mad idea that we could stop breaking the law! I don't like the fact that I can't take potshots at a burglar in my house (or sometimes even chavs in the street) but that doesn't stop me from adhering to the law.

Also, don't blame the police (and others) for enforcing the law, blame the local authorities and Government for implementing bad laws in the first place. I would rather see derestricted motorways, all traffic calming removed and reasonable speed limits set for each road, note this may even include 20 limits at peak times near schools.

Setting blanket 50mph limits on great stretches of road that have short stretches where 50 is appropriate and long stretches where even 70 wouldn't be too fast is mad and will wind most drivers up. The problem I see is that if they raise the limit in those areas where it is appropriate then a lot of drivers won't slow down for the slow stretches. In Germany on the Autobahn there are numerous changes of limit from unrestricted down to 120kph and back and the Germans mostly will respect the change and slow down. Can you realistically see that being the case in this country? Perhaps we could take the initiative and suggest that this could be a useful carrot for SpeedSpike rather than just another stick.

It would have to be in quite a low orbit to read number plates. I wonder if some sort of black market Chinese missile might be able to deal with it.....

The cameras seem to be independent of one another and rely on GPS to get their position and GPRS (mobile telephone data technology) to communicate back to the central station. This means there is no requirement to wire all of the cameras together in their own network. There is no spy satellite which tracks your car's movements. The Telegraph story is sensationalist scaremongering IMHO. This system is no easier to fool than SPECS (normal average speed camera system) in that removal or obfuscation the front numberplate will prevent it getting any information on you. With the inevitable cut in road policing this system will allow it also means that there'll be less trafpol to catch you without a readable numberplate.

See here for more information. This topic was also discussed very recently here.

Yes, because people will see the reasons for the limits being as they are, rather than a one size fits all limit. If we had the same for example, then the M6, M1, M25 etc would be slower because of heavier traffic, lots of traffic joining and leaving, whereas the M18, which is always quiet would be a higher limit, there are very few junctions and very little traffic. I think if people saw common sense being applied they would be more likely to adhere to the law.

Reading number plates from space? Hogwash. Think it through.

I can imagine GPS based pricing and speed enforcement, however.

Personally I think all the st like this being implemented will just lead to a lot of people, including a majority of high earners moving elsewhere. Which will on its own lead to most of the, dare I say it, smarter citizens who in turn earn more moving, leaving st all in this country. (In the long run)
