Assuming all auto.

I would say 3.0 petrol 20mpg around town, 28mpg motorways, 25mpg average.
3.0d, 25mpg town, 35mpg motorways, 32mpg average
4.4i, 18mpg town, 15mpg motorway, 23mpg avarage

This is based on my 5-series experience minus a bit for weight and 4wd. May be worth posting in the BMW forum.

If you are looking for economy, this is not the car.

Thanks. Not looking for economy - more interested in whether the 4.4 is really going to be that much worse than the 3.0 on a run, especially as they are a couple of grand cheaper (all being equal). My old 5.0 E39 M5 gave mid 20's on a run!

Any actual owners who can give real world experience would be appreciated!

I've driven a 4.4 and a 3.0 petrol X5, and whilst I can't comment from personally filling them up, I can't see how the 3.0 can be any more economical in real world daily duties. You really have to thrash it to get it to move. The V8 is an engine perfectly matched to the cars size and weight.
