Insurance is going to be the killer given your age, but make sure you get a policy you can cash back in/pay monthly with no cancellation charges and it won't be quite so painful.Thoughts please?
Given anything powerful is going to be expensive on the insurance side go for broke. I mean is it really going to be much cheaper for a BMW 535 vs BMW 735 (£600 - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1653236.htm) or if you can push it a 750 (£3000 - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1539937.htm). If you're going to buy a big barge you might as well have a bigger barge than everyone else!
Hell, for £3,800 you can turn a few heads too with an 840 or even 850 (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1635207.htm / http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1615202.htm). That's got to be worth a call to get an insurance quote!
Or Fiat Coupe?

If I were you I would be temptred to go down int eh e46 and save your cash for fun..
However if you want something different, and fun at legal speeds, why not an old mx5? There are a few in the classifieds under £1,500, when you get back give it a polish and you'll probably get most of your cash back....

My ideal car to go to Le Mans in would be different, do 30+mpg, be able to open the doors easily on the ferry, have no ground clearance issues and not leave you with tinitus and ponging of exhaust fumes at the other end.
Still one out of five's not bad

Oh dam I am not really doing this right then. Looking to take the MK2 Jag down so I will have
Point 1: Fail 16 - 18mpg
Point 2: might be ok but will be worried about the family parked next door with the 6 year old.
Point 3: it is quite low ok not an lotus but low next to say a Focus.
Point 4 & 5: Straight through exhaust and 1960 suspension.
And we are leaving from Edinburgh.....

When the mx5 was mentioned I has 10secs where I thought HELL YEH! But then I remembered I need something big enough to take maybe 3 people and loads of stuff as our other car is now a lupo or polo and not the passat est. it was going to be. I droove a mates one and wow! It was the most controllable car with it's arse end out ever! I like the old jag idea though, it was loads of car for not a lot of money,any other suggestions?
I would say 924 but as you have to take passengers, I guess that one's out.

3 in the polo then and get yourself a 2 seater. Take less stuff.

Pah, what's the worst that could happen ?? About three years ago I acquired a BMW 735SEi, with the intention of using it for Le Mans that year and then selling it afterwards.
Except I've still got it ! And it will be doing its third trip this year. On at least two occasions it has had 4 'ample' blokes inside, along with a boot full of clobber, and it coped admirably. Last year it was forced to, after a friend's 911 lunched its engine and we had to repatriate them.
That said, it wasn't a really naily example - even now it's only just done 130,000 miles - and I've spent quite a bit of time, money and effort in maintaining and improving it. But for a cheap car it's done us proud.
