I see the Irish PM has warned business about profiteering from the current travel problems.

Seems that Uk companies are making hay while the sun shines as the cheapest Eurostar seat I can find at the weekend is £220 one way unless I want a late Sunday night ticket (£165) with no connection. Cheapest ferry to avoid the main channel ports is over £300 a ticket. Won't be helped by the London marathon filling the capitals beds as I noticed before all this started that some hotels had doubled rates for this coming weekend.

So, legitimate business opportunity to make a few bob in a dificult economy or a time for understanding that people have had to drag themselves back across Europe and spwend more than they planned for and could do without train companies, ferries, hotels and the like trying to exploit their misery.

I declare an interest as my student son on a £50 short trip to Germany is now 5 days overdue for the trip back and having to make his way to Paris and get his current girlfriend to stay with his ex-girlfriend which has to have the potential for fireworks (althoughh nice of the ex to offer her sofa and a three-some is always a possibility I guess).

Our PA has just booked a ferry ticket Dover to Calais for £25 for Friday morning via Sea France. Seems quite reasonable I guess.

That was for a leave time of 6am, bit early but cost is reasonable.

Sea Cat is good but they won't take footpassenger bookings only with a vehicle but that is only £56 with 2 passengers.

Some business' are not profiteering at all. I have lost half a dozen airport transfers over the last weekend and have just spoken to our local travel agent who I work with to try and help get some of his clients home.

We have offered to collect people from any of the ports at a little over cost a) to keep the wheels turning and b) not to profit from people's misery and misfortune.

This offer is open to all and sundry as well.

My families business specialise in bulk powder, and we have a lot of a grey ash type product. I was thinking about dropping a tonne on a friends car via the telehandler, so he could make a fortune in the press but I told him the bag might make it a bit obvious.

That said I've had a few text messages claiming this volcano's done more for UK immigration than the Labour party have in the last 12 years, so maybe we all have!

Eurostar is majority owned by the French (SNCF). British companies (National Express and BA) only own about 17%.

Groupe Eurotunnel S.A. (listed on London and Paris), is a public listed company, and runs the Channel Tunnel earns £25 per passenger per return journey from Eurostar.

So, it is the frogs that are the winners there.

They are a Business. They exist to make money. Their computerised ystem will work on a "supply and demand" system- the more demand there is, the higher the price. Harsh, but that's what they do and you dont think twice about it working the other way- getting a cheap deal because there isnt a lot of competition.

I'm trying to alter a flight in July with BA.

A seemingly simple change in return flight from one week to the next.

The cost has gone up 35% in the last week and I'm told that until I pay up, that rate is "fluid" at best and could go up again.

Supply and demand. And Ferry companies have a guaranteed income, so needn't worry about upsetting people.

If it's happening I'm not surprised at all. I follow my football club around the world & when a fixture abroad is announced it's a mad rush to get the trip booked as quickly as possible because the price of every flight from anywhere near here to anywhere near where we're going around the date of the match increases dramatically. Does my head right in.

Supply and demand. The ferry and car hire companies KNOW that alot of their current business will not be repeat business, hence they don't give a fk about enraging or upsetting people. Their 'customers' will already have their tickets at the old price...

Profiteering from misfortune may seem ruthless, but any business would use circumstances to their advantage where they could. Such is life.

I've even heard of car hire companies, with reference to the not so well known ones, charging up to 1000 Euros a day for 1 day car hire with different drop off points.

I was looking to book a eurotunnel in May. <£100 before lunch so I thought I'd book it after lunch.. £150 after lunch!

So chose ferry for a little over 1/3 that.

If any post sums up supply and demand this one does.
