Well after a relatively short time in my E60 M5 I have decided that it's time for it to go and I'm seriously considering a 335i Sport Saloon instead.

I look at the figures and what I'm paying out it's just not worth it for the driving I get in the M5. I can only go as fast as the car in front of me and when that car moves and I press the pedal I seem to catch the next car all too quickly.

So half the costs in general for a 335i and probably not half the fun?

Not really made for comment, just wanted to share my M5 story with everybody!

Well, that didn't last long!

A lot of people seem to be shifting their M5's at the moment, I cant help but feel that they are not getting the love they once used to frown

Hope you enjoy the 335i!

I know, only bought it in November last year.

I'm getting on a bit now at 37 years old and I just feel as though I'm using the car to about 50% of what it can do, so I might as well pay 50% less and drive another car to about 90% of what it can do.

Who knows, I might be getting a 118d next :-)

indeed a lot of folks are selling their M5's. Are they that expensive to run? There is a bit of a size difference between the M5 and 335i saloon; if you dont need the space then the 335i will be fun enough i reckon. You'll miss the engine in the M5.. right?

I do like the size of the 5 series and I would like another 5, but I want performance without all the costs and there isn't a 5 series that fits the bill. A 550i would be similar in costs to my current M5 (I assume) so the 335 seems to be the "best of both" with only a compromise on space.

I love the engine on the M5, the sound it makes is amazing. The gear box is horrible, the delay I get sometimes when it changes from 1st to 2nd is scary, pulling out in traffic can be hit and miss, floor it and you'll lose control, don't floor it and it'll wait for what seems like about 3 seconds between 1st and 2nd gears!!!

Finally I don't want a diesel, they just don't do it for me at all!

I think you either didn't give the M5 enough time, bought too hastily, or just bought the totally wrong car for your needs smile

Anyone who wants the M5 knows its an epic car, I loved mine, but I like you found that after a while I just did not need all that space (I howver loved the power and did use it 90% of the time wink)

Were you the chap who bought their M5 off e bay?

I had an E46 M3 for 3 years, swapped that for something sensible and got a Lexus IS220D (?), hated it within minutes but managed to keep it for a year and decided the M5 was the one for me, talk about over-compensation! I didn't really drive any before committing to buy and I wish I had done, perhaps I should have known it was the wrong car for me from the start.

My wife hates it, she says it's much too fast and I agree with her, putting my foot down and doing 130 mph seems too easy, it's scary fast!!

I didn't buy it off eBay, I bought it from a dealer just before it snowed last year!

Ah sorry, someone on here bought one off e bay last year, thought it might have been you.

My wife hated the M5 as well, she only drove it twice in 14 months!

I hope you didn't lose too much on it?

Without wanting to start the whole petrol/diesel debate again, wouldn't a 535d be the logical option if you want economy and some poke, rather than a 335i? That is, unless you absolutely hate diesels?

I dont think anyone wants D, if they had a choice everyone would go for P. It's all about the MPG issue!

D smells and engines still sound tragic! Lots of high end power issues.. hardly a desirable fuel.

Hope you dont mind me asking, how young are your kids?

How practical is the M3? You got the coupe right?

37 is no age! If anything 37 might be the right age for a M5? I think its a 40+ car?Too much of a daddy car...

Kids 2 and 6, car is CAB, but wife has Passat for long range use..
It is the best car I think coming out of 911s which I was using less and less cos of number 2 arriving . Boot not massive but pushchair goes in ok.

Its a good alrounder, goes well, and is useable all the time, with bonus of soft top.
I had seatbelts in the rear of the GT3 and a porsche kids seat sat perfectly in the cut outs (no seats)...those were the days...but pre 2 year old...

So the M3 is no problem...

Roll on the lottery win and 997 RS for me and my son!!!!!

Well I wish you luck with the lottery win! I am too looking for a sensible high performance family car; hence the questions!

Daz,

What settings are you driving with? This should not be happening!!

I keep hearing about the jerky gearbox....bla bla bla....bkS!

The car can be driven smoothly at all speeds once you learn how the box works.....I really enjoyed perfecting this and get a kick out of it still, especially the full beans stuff.

Women are generally scared of M5s, not so much because of the power, but more because of their size.

Good luck with the 335.....enjoy it for what it is rather than comparing it with the M5....it's an excellent choice.

Me.....I'm sticking with the M5 for surebyebye

Sorry Lostprophet having owned a 535D for 3 years I can assure you that you are wrong on both counts.

It may not be the right car for the OP, but modern diesel cars are a world away from 80's diesel Astra vans! A standard 535D is a very capable car, map it and it's even better and whilst no where near M5 performance the car is a great cruiser, quick when you want it to be and the gearbox is super smooth and super fast to change gear (the SAT is a significantly better box than the M5 has for example).

Usually when it's cold it's just difficult to drive, the pause between gear changes seems like forever. I tried on setting 5 but that obviously changes gear at higher revs which means I'm driving along in 2nd doing 40mph at about 7,000 rpm. Setting 3 seems like the best option as it then sets off in 1st, but the changes between gears really does take a long time. It also takes the same amount of time if I'm using the paddles or not.

If my foot is planted firmly in the carpet then the gear changes are very fast indeed, neck snapping fast, but there doesn't seem to be anything in-between.

As for diesel, I just don't like them, had a 1.9TDi that was remapped, also had a 2.2TDi Lexus. They just sound like tractors and I know I won't be happy with one, no matter how fast it is. It's all about the note that comes from the exhaust :-))

I have to agree slightly with Lostprophet, we've got an A5 3.0TDI Quattro and although relatively powerful as far as diesels go, it does still sound agricultural frown

The A5 does circa 30mpg if you put your foot down which isn't great, and hardly worth buying for the economy. If you do big mileage then buy a 2.0TDI which does near 50mpg and it does serve a purpose, but I have never really "got" why some people buy big engine diesels and chip them to high heaven to get more power, why not just buy a powerful petrol car?
