First you need to know what version PSP it is and what version firmware it is running.
The earlier the better. The more recent versions require something called a Pandora battery which is more cost and messing around as opposed to an early version which can just be done by downloads.
Be careful though, if you dont know the exact version and dont follow the exact instructions for that firmware you can brick it.
Seeing as you didnt know what he was talking about, your best bet may be to find a kid who does it all the time.

I looked into this for my lad and decided it was too much hastle, its all about installing older versions of firmware and needing specifit firmware versions for specific titles, so its not just a case of unlocking it then it will play games from a stick, you need different firmware for different titles.
The PSP can play videos even without custom firmware - iirc it plays a wide range with the most recent official firmware, and even with the older versions you can still use a converter (easy to find) to convert video files to a format it'll play.
As for keeping custom firmware updated - it's a relatively simple task once you have custom firmware, usually just a matter of downloading an installer and running it. Or at least, it was the last time I updated mine. I'm afraid I can't remember specifics on how to set the firmware up in the first place though, as I did so years ago - but following a guide should work well enough if you're comfortable with this sort of thing.
Edit to add: Using custom firmware is perfectly legal - pirating games to play on a PSP with custom firmware rather less so.

Any volunteers?
Its a psp 2001 and firmware 6.20
Sadly can't be hacked.Its a psp 2001 and firmware 6.20
But as has been said, video playback isn't a problem - just use something like PSP Video 9 or eRightSoftSuper, they encode to the right format and you just copy over to the \Video folder and away it plays.

I'm in no way responsible for you bricking his PSP. That said, I've done a few and never had a problem.
