Discussion
Today Micheal Howard has pledged to rip out all cameras that are placed to raise cash and not to save lives.I will be voting Tory next time but if thay get in I will not hold my breath.
In the meantime, Mr Howard, if you know we are beeing fleeced why are you not publicly shafting Tony Blair about it at Prime Ministers Question Time?
( sorry to repeat this from another thread but it deserves a proper airing )

Haven't Labour just started a review in which they have so far managed to find no cameras wrongly sited?
According to the BBC website (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/3514747.stm) quoted in the "Speed Cams to be Cut in London thread" (www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=10&h=&t=83475):
In that thread I accused the Tories of saying that they are where they should be. However, the quote was missing some detail. It seems that it's the DfT. So perhaps there is hope that something might change under Howard?

Shadow transport secretary Damian Green has called for a national audit of cameras.
He wants to know which are necessary for road safety and which appear to be used for raising money.
He said: "I'm delighted that the Metropolitan Commissioner has responded so quickly and sensibly to the misuse of speed cameras.
"Conservatives think they should only be used for road safety, not as a silent tax collector for Gordon Brown."
A spokeswoman for the Department of Transport told BBC News Online: "We are clear that cameras should only be used where there is a history of accidents.
"Cameras are there to save lives and change driver behaviour, they are not there to raise money.
"We recently wrote to all partnerships for assurance that all cameras are where they should be and early indications are that they are."

Because the Prime Minister would point out in reply, on national television, that it was the Tories who introduced speed cameras and Michael Howard, in particular, as Home Secretary, who introduced Section 172. I.e. unless you 'fess up, we will prosecute you for that instead.
