MGM only acquired the Bond movies when the original studios behind the films, United Artists, went bust in 1982.

No more Bond movies till MGM is settled (dead or sold). Apparently signing a director kicks off a stage payment from MGM to Eon, so they're avoiding doing that. #23 will come along, though p'raps not in time for the 50th anniversary.

the Bond Franchinse is one of MGM's best assets, it won't vanish, just may take a little while to sort out.

Exactly - it survived a studio bankruptcy once before (see my earlier post).

Will DC still be Bond when it comes back?

I wonder if Clive Owen is ringing his agent.

and the previous recession in the early 90s. That seemed like a very long time to wait.

It'll be a smae if it sops with QoS- the worst Bond film.

D'you know what, I don't think I would really mind this happenning. I was a bit encouraged by Casino Royale, and the arrival of Daniel Craig, but after seeing it again recently and after the pained viewing of Quantuum I really don't think they should do any more.

I think I am also still outraged by the Aston being rolled in Casino, which I simply cannot come to terms with.

Don't watch the original Italian Job then, it will traumatise you.

Problem is though MGM owe something like in the order of over £1bn.

Even the profit from a Bond film at maybe £200m overall means that it is just about servicing their debt - it would take a long time to get straight even in a perfect scenario.

Their major assets are the Bond franchise and the studios, and neither are worth as much as their debt IMHO.

I have a horrible feeling that this will drag on for some years to find a buyer for the studio and the franchise.

It's not the fact they trashed the car (and the Italian Job really does make me wince), but that the film's director felt he had to have the car destroyed after rolling on a perfectly smooth road, performing a manoevre that the car was built to carry out safely. If I was Aston Martin management I would have been livid seeing that.

It's no great loss is it? Casino Royale was ok but about an hour too long and the poker sequence was painful. Quantum of sloace was just plain ste.

Maybe someone will get their hands on the rights who cares more about making a halfway decent movie instead of an extended car/phone/watch advert.

And that is exactly why it is beeing used as a tool to lever a deal, I very much suspect.

MGM have several offers and I would not be surprised if, as 007 is probably one of the key assets, the acquirer has not shored up a deal with Eon. Net result, pulling out one of MGMs revenuestreams will encourage them to do the deal.

With several deals on the table it must be strategic that this has hit the news at this time.

didn't the Broccoli family imply this is why they didn't assign a director.

As then MGM own the rights to the film.

So at present it will be made, just unsure whether it will be MGM.

I'm afraid I kinda agree with this assessment. I enjoyed CR but the poker was verging on the ridiculous. QoS was garbage.

Turns out that SMERSH really controlled a front firm......Goldfinger Sachs, and they eventually brought 007 down by specious Bond trading.
