What's the best diesel motor for under £1k? Will be doing a 30 mile round trip to & from work very soon so will need something fairly reliable ..... or shall I stick to a smaller petrol motor?
I seem to be swinging around French diesels like the old Citroen ZX.
306, ran the HDi variant for a few years then sold it on. Its done well over 140k (I bought it on 30k) and has only needed the crank pulley replacing in that time. Not counting consumables obviously, not bad for a V plate I reckon
if you go for the citroen/pug option the 406 would probably be the most comfortable but the 306 will be the most fun (although it wont be a massive amount of fun!)
had a 306 td that i sold to i mate, basic service done by my dad literally cost pennies on parts, was good on fuel and nippy compared to my mates 1.7td astra van(mk4)
might buy it back off him infact, need i say anymore...
I think that the 1.9 TDI MK2 Seat Ibiza is a good choice. 110bhp and weighs as much as a Polo. Plus they should be reliable. Not sure if you can get them under £1k but their always around that price.
if you get a ZX or a 306 with a Bosch diesel pump you can run a veg oil mix ..... new Veg is 83p litre.... mix it at 30%...happy days... and emissions are lower too at MOT...
Veg oil you have to be careful with. Bosch fuel pumps are ok, but there are a bunch of scare stories about the Pug HDi engine not liking it at all. The older TD's are ok to run on oil as long as it's bosch and not a lucas pump iirc.
