Can anyone help?!!

We have 2 labradoodles. Every morning at 6 we get up to walk them before work. Its been the same routine for 5 years, except school holidays and weekends when we're off.

Recently, in the last couple of months they have started getting over excited when they hear us getting up. They bark like crazy as soon as they hear the bedroom or bathroom door open. Once we get down stairs they have stopped barking but are still very exciteable.

I tried one of those high pitched braking repellant devices which does nothing to help. The only thing I can think of is trying to break the routine by maybe doing a longer walk at night and not walking them every morning.

Any suggestions?

Cheers!!

change the habit, do not go down stairs until they stop barking. Ignore until dogs are calm and reward.

I need one of those in my car. Should be useful in a traffic jam!

WD40 is a good braking repellant.

hehe

What kind of range can I get with that? I want to be able to use it on at least the next three or four cars ahead of me (and not my own car)

A water spray bottle with a drop or 2 of lemon juice in it, when they bark spray them in the face, they don't like it

Do you take them out whilst they are still excited and barking?

If so, don't. Wait until they have settled down before taking them out.

The OP's problem is the dogs barking before he gets to them though.

Thats the problem. Its when they hear the door opening upstairs that they bark. By the time we get downstairs they've stopped. Im puzzled as to why its only started recently as we've been doing the same thing for years.

Also, if you get up early on a weekend, they dont bark and they dont fuss during the holidays when we get up later than 6.

Are they male dogs or females. Only reason I ask is that my male dog did this. Turns out there was a bh in season so he was doubley excited about getting out and about. If they are males then a quick trip to the vet and a swift cut here, a chop there should sort it out.

I know it’s hard, verging on bloody awkward, but the only thing that really works is ignoring the dogs when they behave badly and rewarding when they behave well.

If they bark when you open the door and shut up when you get downstairs, maybe try opening the door and then doing nothing. At the moment they bark and see their barking being rewarded by you appearing to greet them. Try withholding your presence and see if that helps.

Like this: You open the door. They bark. You stay in the bedroom until they’ve been quiet for five minutes. Then you go downstairs and (if appropriate) reward them for being quiet.

If, one day, they don’t bark at your door opening, rush straight down and give them some fuss and a treat.

That’s the best I can come up with.

A bit OT but that made me chuckle! Dogs can be funny, even though they're being bad!

Ha, at least yours bark...

Mine (20 month old female Labradoodle) rarely gets up to say hello in the morning, never mind actually bothering to do anything! As for getting up at 6AM? Phah, rarely sees the kids off to school in the morning at 8.20AM, lazy lazy cow....

Guard dog? Utter waste of fur. Pet that the kids love? Priceless.

hehe

obviously the buggers have learned to read the calendar in your kitchen and think they're helping you get ready for work on weekdays

the only way of breaking the cycle is what you have been advised already, fail to turn up when expected (dont dash downstairs) and prizes for being quiet only...

Should have had poodladors instead of labrad....

OK
