A theoretical "what car" with a twist
Discussion
You've come to the conclusion that having an impractical car sat on the drive deteriorating while the family all use your car daily snotter is fairly pointless, so you start thinking about binning it, and going for something *completely* impractical instead, but that is cheap and modified. A bit of a track slag. We're talking no interior, stripped to the bare bones, caged and tuned with wheels made to be light and hold fine rubber not enhance the looks, not a sleeper so much as a "none of this is for show" approach.
What would you chose as the base and what approach would you take for a tried and tested method to very cheap but ultimately fast and fun ride?

(not sure I really understand the question tbh)
What would you buy for a second car as a cheap old thing that you could strip bare make fast and fun with whatever mods and take on the track once in a while for a very small budget, and how would you mod it.I'd considered a 205 with mi16 till I looked into it - but that sort of thing.

Completely ignoring the 'cheap' bit I'd go with an Atom or a Radical.
Based on the actual post I'd go with the above - 205 GTi with an Mi16 engine. That or a stripped out mk1 MX5. Or, better still, something like this: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1623228.htm
That is absolutely top money for a Sylva Leader and, no, it's not the prettiest car around, but it's a frequent sprint winner apparently. Certainly a more conventional Leader with a 2-litre Fiat twincam for around £2,000, say, is about the most real sports car you could get for the money. They are genmuinely quick - my old one, bought for all of £1,300 would give the average Caterham a run for its money in a straightline I reckon and it would do a better job than a lot of production cars of keeping up on the twisties.

200sx is on the list. I wasn't sure if it's a bit like the current 'fun' car (celica).
Maybe I should change tack and think about rallies, always wanted to... I dunno just really want something silly and relatively cheap and a good place to thrash it, and historically have spent more time off road than on.
Just got that itch...

Faced with such a dilemma - I was without a fun car having sold the old one to buy a kiddy mobile - I opted for an Evo VIIRS.
They're basically the base car for the Group N rallycars, so have no sound protection, quicker steering rack, no luxury items (although mine does have AC), extra bracing to stiffen the shell, lighter glass, no ABS, No airbags, etc.
To this I have fitted a GSR (comfy, but figure hugging Recaro) interior, but fitted quick release harnesses (so you can still use the rear seats when you need to), and a OMP WRC steering wheel. Hey presto a rally car for the road, that can be used (and is occasionally) to drop my son of at nursery. You get the best of both worlds.
The only downside is it looks like it was designed by a 14 year old boy and is the chavviest looking car ever made. Still on the right day, on the right B road, the looks can be forgiven.

surely the catagories of cheap potential track car are
1) 80s/90s FWD hot hatch perhaps with engine conversion eg 205 mi16/GTI-6 engine, mk1/2 golf with 2.0 16v, civic vti, fiat brava hgt, maybe celica, prelude, corrado type FWD coupes
2) 80s/90s RWD eg 200sx, e30/e36 325i, 3000gto, supra, starion, ae86, saphire cosworth
3) 90s/2000s AWD eg Scooby, EVO, saphire cosworth, intergrale, audi s2
4) Kit car based catafields,7s, dax etc with anything from bike engines to stock 2.016v, to cosworth lumps

ETA... crazy question, anyone seen an MX5 in a rally?!!
Yep quite a few have been rallied, both tarmac and gravel. If you need some inspiration, heres a wee vid of my previous almost-standard MX5 playing around on a local backroad. Obviously not with rallying levels of commitment but you get an idea how much fun they are.http://vimeo.com/8306432
