Right,

the old man is now thinking that the Forester is getting on a bit and will be sidelined for use when shooting/off road etc.

He is now looking for a car that can tow a braked trailer (around 1000kg trailer), 5dr hatch/estate, needs to be a diesel really, around £13,000 and really needs to be no older than around 18months as would like some sort of security on the original warranty.

Any thoughts? open to suggestions, just need to give him some ideas.

He has been looking at pre-reg foci but not overly keen as they are a bit dull.

Skoda Octavia?

What did Top Gear use to tow their caravan? Didn't that win some sort of caravan award.... Was it a Kia?

Not a bad call - my first instinct was diesel Subaru, but they seem to be commanding very strong money.

We had the saloon as a courtesy car, it was the 2.0TDi 140 I believe. Was comfy, well built, spacious, surprisingly frugal and offered decent performance. Was fairly nondescript though, but I'd imagine most cars in this sector are.

Certainly worth a look though.

My old man has a new diesel Passat company car and really likes it. So much so when it came up at the end of 3 years he is ordering another.

bonefish - He's keeping the Forester (2.5XT) so doesnt really want two scoobies sitting on the drive..

Ive just had a chat with him on the Passat and he is going to go and have a test drive in one locally tomorrow so we will see.

have also just been looking at the Hyundai i30 Estates.. they dont look all that bad and you can pick up some good deals on year old models..
