I was just wondering what was the standard donor engine if one wanted to build a Westfield these days

I thought it used to be Sierra engines but not sure these days what would be used

Would the engine from an E30 325 be any good?

Not a common choice for Westies, but a couple of other kits - the Marlin Sportster for example - often use them.

The engine from the 318iS has been used before, 4 cylinder 16v, never heard of a 325 being used, thats not to say it hasn't been done though!

I'd imagine the straight 6 is too long. As has been said already, other kits accept it. Soad is right, you need a Rover V8. biggrin

I think the iron-blocked M series engines (not to be confused with the M-Power S series) are quite heavy and not ideally suited to the wee Westie for that reason.

Its still a sierra for Westies as far as I'm aware.

However, I have an E36 325i with an ok engine but a slightly dicky chassis. So this is very tempting:

Most cars I looked at had Zetecs.

That's OK, as the article doesn't actually relate to an E30 smile

So I have an E30 325i

I would just need to buy a kit

Then some hard toil later and I have a mental machine

Very tempting

You can still get a Sierra SDV (single donor vehicle) kit, however, the MX5 SDV would appear to have taken over as supply of Sierras isn't great.

I believe that there is a much greater number of kits built from mostly new components using the Zetec or Duratec engine or the bike engined variants, yes and of course the old Rover V8.

If you want to use the BMW bits then the Marlin Sportster is a better option, IMHO not as sporty as the Westfield, more of a sporting GT but still fun. (I built a Marlin Roadster with a V8).
