Kev ~ John Storey (ex Scuddies) bought a decent set cheaply in one of the local factors. Possibly Bowman's. I will ask him when I see him next.

Are they Torx? I thought they were a different ford-specific fitting - different number of points?

Could be totally wrong though... just a suggestion to check!

You know, I was thinking that when I looked at the Scorpio "How to" snd saw the bolt heads pictured - they are six pointed star sockets which I took to be Torx... you've got me worried now... might need to pop in to a Ford Dealer if Halfrauds dont have them...

They are Torx (well mine are) can let you know size when i get home tonight.

IICC the 2 litre Ford "Pinto" engine used multi spline (Ford unique ?)bolts.

Have you got yourself an angle gauge for final tightening ?

Thanks Mike...

no I havent got an angle gauge - I was intending to use a torque wrench... but you are going to tell me why thats not a great idea now arent you ... (feels more expense coming on... rolleyes )

The Ford manual spec says tighten down by torque in two stages - then the final stage, turn by a fixed angle (can't remember what it is - 30 degreees or something) to stretch the bolts (don't re-use the old ones!). You can make an angle gauge with a protractor and a bit of wire though...

THEN it says something like "run the engine till it's warm, then remove the plenum etc and re-tighten the inlet manifold (PS you might need to take the distributor back out to get to one of the manifold bolts)"... so you would end up doing most of the job twice...

I see something similar on pages 8 and 9 on this :

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/engines/12v/V6...

I think its the hex head bolts that you can re-use that you need to revisit to retighten. The Torx(?) bolts that cannot be reused dont need to be revisited but do need the additional 90 degree after 5 mins or so... the stretch that you mention which is why they cannot be reused.

so the angle gauge is for the additional final tighten then...? I can see that if it was 30 or 45 degrees a gauge would be necessary but 90 degrees I reckon i could judge pretty well...

You're right - if it's 90 degrees that should be easy to judge.

And I wasn't talking about revisiting the head bolts - it's the inlet manifold bolts you're advised to re-tighten... (IIRC)

From Autodata

Cylinder head
Stage 1) 40Nm
Stage 2) 73Nm
Stage 3) Wait 5 mins
Stage 4) Tighten 90 Degrees

Inlet manifold to cylinder head
Stage 1) 4-8Nm
Stage 2) 8-15Nm
Stage 3) 15-21Nm
Stage 4) 21-25Nm
Stage 5) Run engine for 15mins at 1000rpm
Stage 6) 21-25Nm

The 6 stage setup only appears to apply to the BRC engine code, the BRD/E/F engines it just says do them up to 22Nm. I may be wrong but I thought the inlet manifolds were the same on all of those engines so why the different procedure I just don't know.
It's all German to me.
May just be best to use the 6 stages to be safe even if it is a bit of a bind.

In theory it should be stamped on the block where the engine number is (a sticky out bit just in front of exhaust port 4). However my engine number does not seem to match the Ford numbering scheme and whilst I can see a BR stamped I cannot read a third letter, no surprise there then, it's in a TVR afterall.

From Autodata it does appear that the only ones not fitted with a catalytic converter were the BRC engines, these are also the only ones with solid valve lifters all the rest are hydraulic, but cannot glean anything more from the info I have there.

According to Mr. Haynes (For the Granada)
BRC- Models without catalytic converter
BRD- Type N manual gearbox or Automatic and a cat
BRE- MT75 box and a cat

In answer to your question Norman,
Not bloody clue!
I look into this every now and then and never seem to get anywhere. I keep hoping I will stumble across some pearl of wisdom and find a definative answer but no luck so far.

Carl.

Looked now - interesting as I seem to have just the BR code but the engine number stamped over the top
