I did a lot of research on tyres for my 530D and following a number of reviews and forum recommendations I went for the Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas.
They have performed well, great balance of grip in the wet and dry.
At the time, Camskill were doing a cracking deal on them so worth checking.

Vreds outperform the falkens easily on the E46.
255 35 18 and 225 40 18.
After 50% wear the falkens were getting very slippery and ended up with some serious inner wear issues. Changed to Vreds, better grip and completely even wear rate across the tyre.
Recent costs show 240 + 200 = 440 for 4 tyres.
Falkens were a tad cheaper I think. Maybe 425 or something..
So out of them 2 definitely go for the Vreds.
Conti SPC3 outperformed both of the above, but just marginally. It gave the E46 a more comfy and softer ride, grip levels were just as good as the Vreds, did notice a slight improvement in braking aswell. However prices aren't justified when you look at the performance of the Vreds.
PS2s, meh, same grip as all the tyres above. Just a much bigger price tag.

The problem I found with Falkens was simply they weren't wide enough to cover the rim and left the rears in particular exposed and ready for a kerb experience.
I'd have them again without question as they seemed to do the job very well (albeit a bit slippery for the first 1000 miles or so).
I'm just about to replace all four on mine and I am tempted to go back to continental but I agree the cost is huge.

Tried online sites like camskill or blackcircles?
These are good. Also try Kwik Fit if you have a decent local branch that isn't staffed by monkeys. I got four Conti run flats for my 320d for £360. Obviously smaller size tyres than your 535d but I thought that was a decent price.
Like you I didn't fancy the cost of the conti 3s on my 535d . I also wanted to try something different to see if I could get better life . Last set of conts fronts had to be repalced at 6500 mls as they wore like 50p pieces and rears lasted typically 12-15000mls. Got Kumho ku 31s. They are wearing well but grip is noticeably worse than the contis both wet and dry ( mine a
Are 19s and non runflats )Hhope that helps

My car had Dunlops (think Sport Sp!!) on the rear and found my traction control kickin and out alot in the wet so i changed then for Michelins Pilots Sports 2 on my 535d (19") and found the grip and tyre performance alot better both in the wet and dry fronts set me back £240 ish and rear were just shy of £300.
