I've bought some old wooden chairs, like the type you used to get at school. I'm going to sand, fill, undercoat and then paint them in bright gloss colours. What I'd like to achieve, is a further protective but asthetically enhancing see through cover of something on top of the gloss - I want the finish to be extremely smooth and uniform and appear like a marine varnish does over a wooden hull. Any suggestions what I might use?

Maybe some kind of clear lacker (spelling?) or varnish and sand it down between coats might work, but i dont know

More importantly, you dont have a title so its hard to open the thread.

I'd go for an aerosol lacquer too - have a browse round B&Q.

Apologies was posting on the blackbizzle on the way home.

I had thought about varnish but other sources say this can be a right pain in the arse.

I'll look further into laquer.

Could you add varnish to gloss? With progressively more varnish in the mix ?

Cheers
