Freedom of infomation / DP Act re e mails etc

To cut to the chase my "previous" employer , claimed that our main client had made referance to me managing a job , which in fact I had little involvment with.This then resulted in discaplinary action against me.
Now that I have left their employment, and will be taking the issue further, can I ask to see the clients file / e mails under FoI or DPA?
Any advise welcomed!
