What Estate? 330i, Octavia vRS, Passat 2.0T ...
Discussion
Another what car thread ...
We're looking to replace our family car, a BMW 130i M sport, with something a bit bigger to allow us to take kids bikes etc.. and for longer trips away on holiday.
My wife is really happy with the 130 (after years of refusing to buy a BMW!), and our ideal replacement would be a 2nd hand 330i Touring. Problem is there aren't many around, and with a budget of around £15k most are out of our price range.
We test drove an '07' plate 320i SE Touring last week, and both felt we couldn't live with the (lack of) performance.
Looking on Autotrader, I've seen a number of nearly new (i.e. 09/59 with very low miles) Passat Estate 2.0TFSi (i.e. same engine as Golf Gti) for around £15k.
Another option might be an Octavia vRS Estate (the petrol one, again with same engine as Golf Gti) which I've always quiet liked the look of. Looks like Skoda are doing these for around £17k with 0% finance deals.
Any thoughts on how the Skoda compares to the Passat, and how they might both compare to the BMW? Any others I should consider?

Legacy.
3 series and a lot of others (alfa, Volvo V50 etc) are quite small in the back so as for space be careful.
Take time to look on something like the whatcar website they have interior space listed.
Octavia has similar boot space to a 5 series rather than a 3.
I tried the Octavia and its a pretty decent car, not tried the passat so it would only be a guess.
Legacy is a good call, I tried the last version and with sunroof its a really light airy car with a good boot.
The only issue is dealers can be a bit of a treck away which in the end put me off. Unless you have a good indy nearby.
Octavia felt firmer than the Legacy on my test drives which I preferred but with kids the softer ride wins out.
I ended up going even bigger to get all the kids stuff in.....

just to add I tested the legacy diesel.
I was put off the spec b or the 3ltrs as I borrowed an outback a while back and was doing a steady 70mph on the motorway getting low 20's mpg. May have been something wrong but seems fairly typical, just not enough go for the amount it drinks for me. The Diesel was not a bad engine.
The new model seems very expensive now as well.

Most people with the sportier Legacies (2.0 turbo 280bhp or 3.0 NA 240bhp) seem to average mid-20s mpg , and 30-35 on a run. For the size and performance of the cars I think thats decent, but everyone has different expectations. If you do a lot of boring stop-start city driving they may not suit your requirements so well.
Where they really come into their own is becoming magic carpets on rough back roads, the suspension really is very good at its job.

I would quite like an S4 ... I previously had an S4 Avant in the old 2.7T model.Ideally, would like something a bit newer (130i is a 55 reg, and my wife isn't keen to swap for an older car!). Also a bit concerned about the running costs.

If he thinks a 170hp 320i is lacking in performance, do you think he'll be happy with the performance of a 150hp diesel with AWD?ammw said:

I have a 2010 petrol VRS estate company car and it really is a very good bit of kit. Check out "drive the deal" - you can buy one new cheaper than the vat free dealership offers.
I looked at the passat (and I've had one before) but the vrs is virtually the same car for a lot less ££.
I also have a 3 series touring (318i - wife's car really). The vrs is MUCH bigger inside. Didn't consider a bmw as a company car as they are just too expensive - to get similar performance as the vrs ie 200ish bhp you'd need a 325i which is 30k if you spec it like my vrs. Ditto A4.
Still would be tempted by something like this however..:
