Driving through an average speed camera zones this morning, I started to wonder whether the technology could be used for real road safety. So how's this:

Rather than punishing you for simply averaging above the specified limit, what if they compared your speed against the average of the other cars on the road around you?

While I don't agree that driving above the speed limit is inherently dangerous, I think it could be argued that a significant speed differential is.

There would have to be a minimum amount of traffic and over a certain time limt, because if you arrive half an hour after a funeral cortege it'd be a bit harsh to get done biggrin

Obviously it won't happen because it probably wouldn't generate enough revenue to cover the camera costs but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts anyway? smile

How would you like a ticket for doing 50mph in a 60 limit, passing two tractors doing 15mph (them being the only two other vehicles on the road)?

You didn't think it through, did you?

That's why you'd have a minimum amount of traffic, and a minimum speed to trigger it.

I can kind of see your logic... but there are too many variables...

However, a properly trained policeman might be able to do a better job than the cameras....

Too many variables to consider. Any prosecution would be greyer than an ageing mule's backside
