I always set my car at 85mph, which is about 78on the GPS from London to Halifax and back each week.

I have the occational blat up to 90 to overtake and perhaps a short stint at an indicated ton when the M1 is devoid of all life.

80-85ish is the agreed 'your not taking the piss' speed... is it not?

I think Mr Plod would proably agree that the speed limit is the appropriate speed!!!

But you're not far wrong from my point of view!

Usually sub ban territory hence 90-100 where conditions allow.

I had a marked car follow me (at night, so I couldn't see what it was until it passed) doing between 80-85 indicated. I guess they were pulling up the details to check it was insured etc. and would have pulled me if it didn't check out.

I thought that was an urban myth, i remember seeing a programme where they tested that theory and it still took the picture.

Has this actually been proven? (and FFS, nobody mentioned the words 'Top' or 'Gear')

85mph speedo speed is a good setting for the cruise control IMO

I've seen a bike go through a camera at 160+ and it didn't flash, yet it appeared to house a camera

I believe a motoring show that is aired on BBC2 tested this with a TVR no less?

165 was the magic number IIRC

I would imagine you would need to be in the highest gear though wink

Depends on the road.

There are some roads in oxfordshire where is common to see speeds of 95-100 ish with no apparent issues.. try that on the m62 on the way to Hull or anywhere in North Wales and you'll not last 2 minutes.

All IMHO of course.

i drive at 70 on the motorway, day or night that way i don't feel i'm pissing money up the wall just to arrive somewhere a bit earlier, that way i don't hold anyone up, nor have to worry about rozzers/gatso's/specs (unless 50, obviously)

any nob (usually in a derv bm) that comes tearing up behind me can scrub off that extra 50mph and wait as i pass an old biddy/lorry/coach etc. why they don't just lift off when they're 0.25km away and insist on emergency braking and flashing + horn just off your bumper is beyond me

all good luck to them, but i'll be damned if i'm going to break the law to benefit their importance!

The speed that the middle lane is doing, with occasional bursts up to outside lane speed when I get bored of the rear end of the car infront.

Just make sure there's someone within sight going faster than you wink

I think your right. Sitting at 95mph is gonna get you pulled over, up here (rightly or wrongly, not the issue beind discussed). 75-80 on the clocks is what I personally stick to.

I have to say that based on my own experiences, although the speeds of the fastest cars may be slower, we do also seem tp have a lot less generally moronic driving, and of course a lot lower traffic density (on the whole, obviously round the cities its still busy at times), than in the South/South East.

And thats fine by me!

The original Gatsometer cameras had maximum speed of 250KPH (155mph). They used to list full specifications including max and min detection speeds on their website but don’t anymore.

It was a Gatsometer used on Top Gear for their demonstration. Other types of camera can detect higher speeds.

i must have missed that one, was it fifth gear or another show that came to the conclusion that you'd need to be travelling at about the speed of sound to get through undetected?!
