Ridiculous Food Prejudices
Discussion
If you're reading this, chances are you're a bit of a foody. Therefore what better place to discuss silly food prejudices that we encounter on a daily basis?
I'll begin:
People who eat burgers and sausages but will not eat roast beef or pork as it's 'too fatty' or too gristly'
People who eat ready meals full of salt who try to tell me that I am unhealthy and will end up with high blood pressure because I add a little to my water when I boil vegetables.
Surely if we eat a cow's arse, then it is just the same as eating its cheek or shin?
Brussels sprouts. There's nothing wrong with them.
Does it start at home when you're growing up? Are issues with food directly related to your parents' likes and dislikes?
Are parents wrong to pass on their own fears of food to their offspring?
Discuss...

Its an obvious answer really.
Yes, kids are restricted to eating what their parents provide initially, and if the parents dont like something, or have a limited diet, then the child is likely to be less adventurous with their own diet. Even at school, kids arent going to select something on offer that they arent familiar with or that their mates are snearing their noses up at.
Unfortunately there is a lot of this I have to deal with regarding my Mrs kids and their fathers side of the family.
Comments such as:
'why are you drinking water, waters for animals. Here, have some coke'
- is just the tip of the iceberg of the cr@p we have to deal with on a weekly basis.

I used to be a bit like this, but as I've grown older my tastes have changed considerably. I now love stuff I hated and things I ate as a child make me physically sick.
I started a similar thread a while back after deciding to buy lamb for a change, (I didn't like lamb but could never remember why and didn't know how it tasted) had it quite a few times since.
Someone once told me your tastes change every 7 years or so, not sure if it's true but I've had some pretty extreme changes.
Re a ridiculous prejudice, I know someone who won't eat chinese food because she "doesn't like chinese people"

People at work literally wouldn't come to our Christmas party because the menu had wild boar, goose and duck on it. They wanted white turkey (breast meat only), cocktail sausages wrapped in bacon etc...
They wouldn't even begin to countenance the idea of trying something they had never had before. When probed further, one girl will only eat meat if it has breadcrumbs on it and it comes in a packet/box from frozen. One of the guys has only ever cooked three different meals in his life, and lives on pizza and takeaways. They all eat ready meals on a regular basis because they "don't have time to cook", despite finishing work at 1630 every day and living 5 mins walk away.

There are some differences in our sensitivities to flavours, and sprouts are one where some people really do find them disgusting.Does it start at home when you're growing up? Are issues with food directly related to your parents' likes and dislikes?

Some of it does come from the parents, but to some extent can you blame them? I find peaches loathsome, so would I really have them in the house?
Conversely, some don't. My parents like peaches, carrots, swede and more, all of which I can't stand. Because I was forced to eat them in large quantities (grown in the garden), most have remained off the list. Some have returned in limited amounts.
If you want an odd one, I can't stand raw tomatoes or tomato juice. But I will have them grilled, in pasta dishes, soup, ketchup. I grew 11kg last year.

I had this, hated raw tomatoes as kid but was persuaded to try one by an ex when I was about 20 - have loved them ever since - very odd.Someone once told me your tastes change every 7 years or so, not sure if it's true but I've had some pretty extreme changes.
Always made a point since then to re-try things I didn't think I liked and found that most of them were agreeable even though in some cases I still wouldn't pick them from a menu where I had the choice of other things... (yes avocado, I'm looking at you).
We all have different tastes, but you tend to find that much food fussyness is , a lot of the time, just bizarre misconceptions.Often of course , enhanced by bad parenting. If someone is hungry enough, they will eat anything, well, just about anything.
There are exceptions of course , every vegan I have ever had the displeasure to meet , have been a cross between extreme paranoia and self obsession. Really weird.
I reckon, that if you like it, do it. That includes food, just an amount of moderation is all thats needed. If you've not tried it, its a good idea to do so.
Nothing brasses me more than w
kers like Mccartney, and now that stuffy cow Winslett, telling people what you should and should not eat for whatever reason. I love meat, veal and foi gras, I want to eat the stuff, not form a relationship with the donor.
Children should be encouraged to be adventurous in a food sense, it broadens minds and increases awareness. Eat by taste, not with eyes :-)

While in theory I believe that these prejudices arise from the parents I am not quite sure what happened to me!
I will be the first to admit I have very abnormal and bad food habbits. I have never been able to eat chicken on the bone, I can't eat red meat unless its in mince form and generally not a great meat lover. However my parents are complete opposite and ever since a young age have always encouraged to try and taste everything which they do adhere to themselves.

I'm exactly the same.I will be the first to admit I have very abnormal and bad food habbits. What about Lamb.. Do you eat that?
I think alot of food prejudices come from a mixture of not knowing anything else (ie. that was your parents preference) and personal experiences.
Relating to the fat on meat comment, that is me all over. I love burgers and sausages and even though I am weary about the cheap ones and content, I don't bat an eyelid at wolfing them down regardless of what is in them, fat, gristle and all. Yet put a piece of lamb or pork with rubbery fat/rind on it in front of me and I lose my appetite. I'd rather go without.
I am also weary of meat on the bone with one exception. Chicken. Again, I have no idea why.
I also grew up having never really eaten fish. It wasn't a done food in my house. My parents don't touch fish, with the exception of a battered cod on a rare occasion. Hence I have always been slow to try fish. I didn't eat tinned tuna until I left home, but I love it. However, I've never tried tuna steak. Or smoked salmon. Or white fish. And frankly don't think I could. I don't do fishy fish. The smell makes me heave. I'll eat prawns if they are in something, but the thought of prawns as a dish doesn't appeal.
Very strange, and no doubt it is all in the mind. It is just the fear of the great unknown I guess.

Chicken on the bone is a no go, Beef, Pork, Lamb, can't do any of them.
But, chicken breast, yes.. Sausages, or even Gammon i'm fine with.
Fish I can't do.
So so picky

So do you like nectarines?
Sort of peachy, but shaved.
I do actually, one of my favourite fruits.Sort of peachy, but shaved.

Just don't like the feeling of peach skin, puts my teeth on edge. The only other thing that does the same is the texture of artificial bath sponge - the really cheap crappy ones you can buy.
Horrible.
