Just wondering if anyone can help.

I want to tap into the tape deck out with an iPod cable. However, nowhere can I find out which wires are which. Its on a 728i E38 on a W plate.

Can anyone help? A long shot I know...

Hi there

~Could you explain a little better please?! what's a 'tape deck out'?

What are you trying to acheive? ( I know it's Ipod playback!) and how are you wanting to acheive it ?

What stereo system is currently in the car?

Cheers! Dennis.

Right, to explain. I've just purchased a 728i and it just has a radio and tape deck in the dash (two separate units). On the net on Bimmerboard I found a method of tapping into the tape deck output.

Basically, you take a iPod-RCA cable and splice it into four of the wires leaving the tape deck. You then put a blank tape into the deck and connect the iPod. Effectively the iPod and tape are playing at the same time, but obviously no sound from the tape.

On Bimmerboard there is a very good step by step way of doing this, except that it is on a higher spec car with a different sound system (and different wiring).

Basically my question is this - Which wires should I Piggyback? The tape deck in questio is a BMW C23 MID.

Hope that clears up my rather muddled post!

Why not just get one of these:

Hi there,

I have no idea on this im afraid, to do the job this way I'd suggest asking the forum on which you saw it for further information. You might get the same sort of info on other forums as well. Overall, you've got to really want to do it this way to spend the time and effort just to get iPod playback on the standard radio cassette. If that standard radio/cassette packs up then along with it goes your 'mod'!

I'd suggest looking at the options listed above - zero hassle and will get the functionality you need in about 10 seconds when plugging the cassette adaptor in!

Otherwise, wait till around mid June when the E39 Dynavin unit and a couple of other Clones are released which has the GPS/Touchscreen/DVD player/Amplifier/iPod control/Digital TV and amplifier all built into a replacement head unit to come out. It'll then also fit an E38!! They'll be around £650 and many E39 guys around the world are waiting to upgrade to it!

Cheers, Dennis!

Cheers for the replies guys. I've done a little more research and I don't think its possible on my car (I did post on the other forum but no reply).

So tape adaptor it is... Nothing wrong with that, I just fancied hiding all the wires away. The tart in me wanted a more elegant solution...!

I done this mod on my e38 tape deck, but the line level audio isn't present on the rear connector except for the cd changer which you can't tap into without an actual cdc. to add the line in you need to open up the tape deck, cut the tracks on the pcb between the tape head pre amp and the next amp/dsp/equaliser stage the TDA7318 then solder the aux wires in there, Right+ pin 9 Left+ or you can do away with AM radio and use r10 l14 and tie the neg to any one of the ground rails on the board.
It was actually a waste of time as I found a kensington ipod fm transmitter, that not only gave excellent sound but it also transmits RDS so that the name of the song playing comes up on the MID and the speedo cluster. I have an Iphone now which doesn't support the rds function and my new car has bluetooth streaming so I could sell you it for £20 delivered, it's as new and i'm pretty sure I still have the box and instructions.

This was the head unit I done the mod to BTW, the higher up dsp model has line levels signals at the rear connector, but this one just has speaker level wiring there, except for the cdc input
