I know they used to do that thing with their wipers to look like a BTCC car, but I'm assuming they've grown out of that.

Is the latest thing to make your car look like the bonnet won't close properly?

That's been around for years, usually on Fiesta/Escort RSs to aid cooling... Probably done more now to try fooling people into think they're running silly bhp...

Saw it on an A3 at the weekend, but to be fair, he had a massive front mount intercooler hanging off the front bumper too...

I like single wipers.... classic mod for a mk2 Golf in my opinion

The bonnet "not shut" does serve a purpose.... lets heat out & saves having bonnet vents

my brothers bonnet was like that for a different reason.... the bonnet would not shut properly due to the engine

....

I think the whole "chav" modded car thing has pretty much died out due to insurance costs, fuel costs & section 59's for hanging about in car parks

....

This fella's usually driving a standard car now..... or getting a lift off his Mam

I thought it was a Japanese thing, took to heart by Ford fans in an effort to look cool.
I think the official name is riser blocks, and it's often just shimming up the rear hinges by an inch

DRLs are the current chav addon. So chav, Audi fit them as standard so the chavs dont have to use the giro to fit them.

Is that because the manufacturers forgot about cooling?

More a Turbo thing but that's mainly Japanese stuff.

No they just built the car to a spec, add big/bigger turbos and it can all get a bit hot.

Those front wheels look very close to being wider then the wheelarches- ie illegal. I bet he has some fun at MOT time!

They look stupid apart from when taking it on track and need to aid cooling

Sadly, the modern Aero wiper blade ruins the whole thing

And the touring car mirrors ... bit of a mong the mk2 golf.

The rear bonnet raising thing has proven to be a waste of time , esp on MX-5's anyway , plus it make you look like and uber berk . the single wiper ? buy a citroen AX , as for the ford pepperpots on the other golf ... well ..

I'd expect the high pressure zone in front of the windscreen (that makes the blowers blow with the fan off) to cause a slight increase in air pressure in the engine bay and therefore a slight decrease in cooling efficiency, if anything at all.

Bonnet vent and single windscreen wiper standard on the whole Fiat Panda range from 1981 to 1995. The Fiat Panda is the greatest car ever built that's why everyone tries to copy the design. wink

Vent's at the rear of a mk1 Golf bonnet are for the blower/heater only (sealed off from the engine bay)

Scoop on the top of the vents is made by Kamei, does a really good job forcing a bit air in

The bonnet didn’t stay that for long…. We managed to “lower ” the carb & filter wink

This has got over 300bhp per litre, no vents or raised bonnet:

Supra is a proper performance car in the first place, so I they will have been designed with good airflow through the engine bay.... so I'd think that even a tuned road going Supra would manage without vents or a lifted bonnet

A tuned Supra on a track or drag racing may benefit from a vented bonnet though

...

The main place that I've seen raised bonnets has been at the drag racing, probably due to having to warm your car up before running down the strip.... but not wanting the hot air in the engine bay been stucked through the air filter as you set off the line

Yer I'd agree with that..... certainly at higher speeds

Major draw back when the bonnet was raised on my brothers Golf was that the blower pulled in fumes from the engine bay frown

We knew this would be a problem even before we raised the bonnet.... but seeing the bonnet would not shut, we had no choice..... the original 1.1 engine died (240,000 miles) & the replacement engine was from a mk2 Golf & the carb sit slightly further back & higher, could not use any standard airbox & the K&N was still twice as high as we'd have liked

Easy weekend job turned into a bit of a nightmare
