When your parents earned their money they paid tax.
When the bought their house, goods etc they paid more tax.
When they maintained that asset they paid more tax.

WTF should the government get even more tax just because those hard woking, tax paying parents have died and left the assets to their offspring?

C&P'd from the debate thread

This tax doesn’t effect the truly wealthy, who dispose of assets and reduce tax liabilities and have done for many years. The people who are hit most by inheritance tax seem to be the people who are asset rich and cash poor..................... who just happen to be the people that labour care about the least.

Against.

You work all your life and are taxed every step of the way. Why should anyone have a claim over what you have accumulated other than those explicitly named in your will?

It can be argued that an inheritance windfall is unjustified because it is not meritocratic and reduces social mobility. It is especially unjustifiable for the tories to raise the inheritance tax threshold when the country is broke.

"Warren Buffett favors the inheritance tax, saying that repealing it would be like "choosing the 2020 Olympic team by picking the eldest sons of the gold-medal winners in the 2000 Olympics". In 2007, Buffett testified before the Senate and urged them to preserve the estate tax so as to avoid a plutocracy"

Social Mobility in the Uk is the worst in the world for socia mobility compared to other developed countries- you lot happy with that?

let he who is without sin cast the first stone..........................

Hilton is American and therefore UK tax law won’t apply, Geldoff may be a drug up trollop, but I'd wager that her and her family’s financial advisors will ensure that any potential liabilities are mitigated.

Taxing people based on the value of the house that they die in, is one of the most pathetic tax laws we have............... as I've said repeatedly, anybody with any real money will have distributed it leagally in an effort to mitigate any liability.
