Pic Of The Week: Maserati Birdcage

The most beautiful racing car ever? Could be

If ever a POTW was chosen by popular demand, this would be it. When we wrote about this stunning Maserati Tipo 61 'Birdcage' earlier this week it certainly won approval from the PH public - its 9.37 out of 10 P.H. O'Meter voter rating* is the highest we've ever seen.

In case you've forgotten, this Birdcage is up for auction next month at RM's auction in Monte Carlo.

Unfortunately, since the lovely Tipo 61 chassis 2470 has a rather stratospheric estimate of £2.1million attached to it - and there were only 17 made in the first place - not many members of the PH populous will ever get their mitts on one.

Which is where POTW comes in. Thanks to the magic of the wallpaper, we can now bring you the chance to crack a Birdcage-induced smile every time you stare at your desktop. Aren't we nice?

You're spoilt for choice with this car, aren't you?

Wonderful, though for me the Jaguar XJ13 is still tops (though it's debatable whether it could be called a race car)

What a beauty, shame they're probably not allowed to make cars like that anymore

first time ever a pistonheads pic has made it to my desktop at work! It's been unchanged for nearly 3 years too!

Does anybody know if those rims are polished ali or chromed steel? It will make a difference to my score.

10 if polished aluminium alloy, 9 if chromed steel (prefer painted steel wires for a racer).

Agreed, the XJ13 is the most beautiful race car bar none - it's a such a shame it never saw a race.

It's a beautiful car, but whoever made that wallpaper needs to learn to use the eraser tool in Photoshop a bit better...

I saw Graham Hill drive a 'Bird Cage' at Brands in the early 60's. A site never forgotten as he held it on the edge going up to Druids!

Pity that tt lord Brocket crushed one and buried it in his garden as an insurance fraud.
