Getting something couriered
Discussion
Anyone got any rough ideas how much it would be to shift an empty server cabinet (approx 100kg) from Kingston upon Thames to Manchester?
Would it be cheaper for man-in-a-van?
Never had to move anything like this before and parcel force want £125!

A van will cost you £50, so it'll be cheaper. Parcel force arn't going to carry it from the server room either.
But really, server racks can cost a fair old chunk of money, and alot more to fill them, and you're worried about £125?
I've got 10U's here worth 300x the cost to move it and still 32U's left.

I would say about £75 for a kerbside delivery if it's not too big.
Don't use Parcel Force - as the name suggests, their strength is smaller items.
Find a local small courier or freight forwarder. You want someone with a base near you to keep the collection cost down.
If it's expensive, make sure you ask about insurance. A lot of couriers don't include it and pay out about £1.30 per kilo if they damage something/lose it.

Many of the courier companies, DHL(spit) UPS, Speedy, wouldn't accept a 100kg load unless it was on a pallet, and their pallet rates can be expensive. We had a log burner to shift, weighed about the same, and our best option turned out to be a half-day transit van hire and lug-it-yourself. We booked the van for the afternoon, the van didn't need to be returned until the next morning, so the return journey was 'free'. The big advantage was the load was supervised by our own people for the whole journey so we knew it was being treated properly.
Unfortunately, I'm the receiver of the package, and the seller doesn't want the hassle of sorting out a courier. I won't be there to sort out a pallet and the only day for collection is the day i'm busy. £45 hire for a van that i could rive myself would be easy in comparison otherwise.
You have, sadly, discovered the irritating side of buying rack cabinets on eBay. These days I just purchase, get the seller to stick it on a pallet and then send McGills or similar in to lift it. Making sure I stress that the truck needs a tail-lift and pallet truck on it as there are no facilities either end. Usually sorts the problem, and most people are happy to grab a pallet. McGills may be able to supply a pallet also if you ask nicely, then you just get the rack sat on the pallet, and tie it down/screw it to the pallet.
