My 2004 65K mile X5 diesel has recently developed a smoking habit when fired up from cold. It's bluey grey smoke and seems to be getting gradually worse. The car drives normally otherwise and it's only visibly smoking after an overnight stop.
I'm thinking the turbo seals may be leaking, any other possible culprits? If it is the turbo can these be fixed or is it a new unit?

I have a 2004 x5 diesel from day one it has filled the garage up with blue smoke every morning.
BMW havent got a clue what is wrong with it.
In australia we only got 60k and 2 years warranty.
Under warranty the following was tried
Engine breather changed 4 times and oil cleaned out of the manifold NO DIFFERENCE
Glow plugs changed NO DIFFERENCE
At 60k Turbo was changed I HAD TO PAY LABOUR
Since it run out of warranty
Manafold cleaned
Glow plug controller changed, Nothing has made any difference.
I was an aircraft engineer many moons ago and I have said all along it is valve stem seals.
Now BMW agree that could be the trouble maybe from new one or two wasn't seated properly.
I told them I was going to current afair tv show dealing with problems they said don't do that we will work something out. After 3 weeks I got a call from the local dealer quote for the job $4400 the said they would kick in $200 towards the job. I told them that was an insult and hung up.
I am sure your problem isn,t TURBO they dont blow on start up then stop smoking.
Sorry to bore you I love the car but hate the smoke I,m stuck with the car now because I wouldn,t have the gaul to sell it to some one as is. RAY HOWELL raye2@optusnet.com.au

I would change the oil breather unit first and check the air filter etc. For the money it costs its well worth it.

I'll be changing the oil breather next week, I'm offshore just now. Winter tyres (and wheels) go on too!

Well that's an oil breather and fresh air filter fitted, it now runs cleanly and is noticably faster.
I bought the car from a garage in Aberdeen last december (6k miles ago), it was apparently serviced before I got it. The air filter was filty and looks like it's been in for a while, so now I'm wondering if the service was just a re-setting of the lights.

Smaller wheels with snow tyres are on too, just in time for me to go offshore for three weeks and miss it all! At least my wife can trundle about in it.
