Clio Sport - reverse, lift the ring under the knob [snigger]
Discussion
A neighbour was just struggling to put his sons newly purchased (old) Clio Sport on the drive as he didn't know how to get it in reverse. I showed him where to lift the ring around the stick so it'd go in but he wasn't getting it so I offered to do it, but I couldn't I lifted the ring but no, reverse wasn't to be found. So I ended up pushing it on to the drive for him. I'm sure that is how you get reverse on a Clio, I drove one maybe 5 or 6 years ago and i'm sure that was right?
Has his son just bought one with a problem?

Had a similar embarrassing moment with a (then) newish Cavalier I had just bought in about 1990. I had always been used to push-across-and-down (or up) and never thought to ask the dealer about how to select reverse. The manual was being nicked off another Cav still in his office so had to do some delicate unparking. No mobiles for the masses in those days.
I worked for a car hire firm a couple of years ago and i was dropped off to pick up a toyota corolla i think, After 10 minutes of trying to start the thing i had to ring someone up who knew what to do. All this time i was sat in someones driveway. I had the same problem with a passat as well. Doh.
I hired a Golf once and had no idea you had to push the knob down to get into reverse
Not long after picking it up I had to reverse in a hurry - not thinking straight I tried to force it and eventually succeeded with a rather horrible plastic snapping noise
After then, you no longer had to push the knob down to get it into reverse

In answer to your question, yes you do lift up the ring to get into reverse on a clio...his must be faulty as mine does it easily
Ok so his sons just bought one thats got a problem, I went throught the forward gears on the box no problem but ring pulled up there wasn't anywhere else to go. Hope its an easy fix for him and not the reason the car got sold.Boosted LS1 said:
If the ring won't budge then grease it.
Ring lifted fine but where I thought reverse should be the lever would't go. Ring down 5 slots were easily selected, I assume 1st isn't a dog leg and reverse should have been behind 5th? Ring lifted it felt solid like there was no slot only the 5 forward gears. I assume Clio Sports are 5 speed...Herman Toothrot said:

im pretty sure it will be to the left of 1st, also how it is on the astra and corsa.
its also where it is on the E46 bmw, but without the lifty bit.
I'm suprised about the Astra as my car has a 2.2 Vectra engine and reverse is behind 5th with no lifts pulls or any other funny manouver its also where it is on the E46 bmw, but without the lifty bit.

Now it's mentioned I do recall the old left thing, it does have a springy resistance to it from what I remember ? I did have a hire clio once a long time ago.
I think all the cars I've ever had its been behind 5th, I think a 205 I had you had to press the lever down?? but everything else has been simply slot it in to where 6th would be on modern stuff.
Maybe on shopping cars they've made reverse idiot proof so it can't be selected when going forward... doesn that make me an idiot for failing to find it???

There would normally be the little graphic on the gearstick that shows where it is; at least that was where it was on my 1.2 Clio II.
