This is a 13 day old report, but how insane are these folks? Three pirate attacks over a ten day period, two on navy ships, has led to the capture of 21 peglegs. Strange choice of targets. scratchchin

I suppose. However, I cannot help but wonder if there is another motive. Even someone stupid would surely realize that six small arms in a skiff will not prevail against an armored warship. Do they think they will gain some sort of "Pirate Hall of Fame" type status for such behavior?

What happens to them afterwards? Do they get dropped off in port and sent to prison locally, or do they get dragged off to some prison elsewhere? Maybe it is a badge of honour?

I notice some are being arraigned in US courts. Probably an easier life than they left. If released, perhaps they do go home in glory.

Maybe it is an attempt to get out of Somalia... Dunno. It's a somewhat futile attempt I would imagine.

Then again, we may be overthinking; your "they are stupid" comment might be spot on. smile

Bizarre. Were they about to be captured as suspected pirates, they panic and open up with the AK's? The story really does sound as if 6 numpties in a dingy took it upon themselves to attack a proper warship. 2 rounds of 25mm in return sounds quite restrained.

Drop them off at Dover, we promise free housing, 50 inch TV, Sky, broadband, food, spending money, health care of a sort a little bit better than the witch doctors back in their village, an education system similar to their own 50 kids in a class (majority of the kids will speak the same language, and they can stab each other at lunch time) After a short while they can bring distant family here and their families,
less risky ways of making income than being a pirate, We have plenty of opportunities for mugging, burglary , car jackings etc in under policed areas. All that we ask is a vote for Labour

They don't have SLR cameras.

I am interested in this as well. To hell with catching dingys on fire, sink their a$$es. Piracy at sea should be like someone acting up in flight; those who delivered an a$$-kicking gets let off due to the circumstances.

Yup... If the pirate types opened fire then give them a boat full of lead.

Think of our ancestors and how they would have handled this (actually, did handle this). Some may call them barbaric, but I am not so sure.

I'd say they're pretty damned smart. They can't really lose. They probably don't care about their own lives that much, which I'd say is true for virtually all small militia groups.

They stand to gain in two ways. In the unlikely event that they can overcome the ship, then they get an awesome prize. If they can't then they get a good meal, and more than likely a free ticket to a nice country where they'll be properly looked after.

Do they get shipped to a nice country though? Do you think Somali pirates will be given a visa, etc?

I'm not sure the pirates realise they are attacking naval ships. All of the events have taken place during the hours of darkness and I would imagine it's quite hard to accurately identify a ship from its silhouette in pitch black out at sea. I imagine they get quite a surprise when it returns fire with 25mm rounds!
