I was reading the "Ridiculous Food Prejudices" thread and noticed this post

I like to think I know a little bit about food but I sometimes get thrown a wild card from my work resturant who like to experiment and have to google what something is. Sometimes simple things like calzone, who knew a folded pizza existed, bit like an italian cornish pasty, sometime more obscure.

Anyway can you name what this is without looking at the picture poperties.

Post your own obscure fuit, veg or meal and see if people can guess what it is

Looks like a baby Durian. Shame you can't smell the internet, cos you'd soon know what it was.

Yep Durian. I have not got a clue about your Nadger Fruit although it looks a bit like a plumb.

I thought plum, the leaves seem like they are Prunus (geek mode teacher) - I was told once that plums are regarded as an exotic fruit in much of SE Asia though, so if it is I'm guessing they're not proper plums like we get here.

Here's one of my faves for visual weirdness and eating too, a sort of unlikely cartoon fruit - don't cheat and look at the picture url:

I'd guessed it: "That looks like a ....." without cheating. And it was. Really wierd-looking though.

From memory my guess would be nutmeg as we had a similar looking tree/fruit growing where I lived as a child.

Easy one, Cashew. My first experience of the tree and the roasting of the nut was a revelation as I had no idea previously how the nuts I bought in shops came about. The fruit itself, though edible, tastes horrible.

How about some others.

tip: #1 and #2 are not even remotely similar...besides both being green, and grown in trees, and spherical in shape and having a rough outer skin. smile

No, but I can see why you would think that. I did think of putting a tamarind photo, but thought that it would be too easy...unlike the Jackfruit which was the first to be identified. rolleyes

Close enough, always known it as Breadfruit and I would say it grows on a tree not a plant, but I don't claim to know the proper horticultural grouping.

As far as I am concerned, if I can climb it, it is a tree. hehe

So, Everest and Kilimanjaro are now classified as trees? wink

What defines a fruit anyway? I'm told a tomato is a fruit, but that's not from a tree...

Yes it was on a tree, saw it in one of the Fijian Islands.
