Been pondering this for a while - any suggestions. My criteria is as follows:

1) easily accessible from the London airports;
2) somewhere where we can, on the spur of the moment, go when we feel like it;
3) warm and by the sea;
4) is basically a nice place to be;

I know if I had the money I'd buy in Gale Portugal.
We always went somewhere different every year on holiday until we went there 4 years ago & we've been back every year since.
Fantastic place with amazing beaches nice & quiet but not far from Albufeira if that's what you want.

(not forgetting worlds best bar with sea views & best atmosphere anywhere )

We are thinking of selling our house in France - see my profile.

Ok, it's not by the sea, but very easy to get to from Hampshire on the ferry wink

shetland isles. Pretty sure you could get you own crofting place, on an island, on your own. Nowt but damp otters and soggy beavers. And the missis....

Circa £250k (ish)
Don't want to rent it out - too much hassle and what freedom to go at a whim
Will pay cash - no mortgage

Today been looking at the Algarve (Portugal) - flights are frequent and cheap. Decent climate. Not too much by the sea though.

Have a look at the area round Almeria in southern Spain. Much of the coast is national park and places like Vera, Mojacar, Roquetas de Mar and Almerimar are all great beach areas. The plus side of somewhere like Roquetas is that it is right on the edge of the Alpujarras and Sierra Nevada mountains and provides great access to some fantastic roads yet still has full facilities. Last time I went, the new motorways also weren't plagued by tolls like they are round Alicante and Murcia. It's where I'd choose and Almeria airport is quite small and very handy.

I'd suggest the following:

1. It needs to be within 40 minutes of an airport e.g. Malaga, particularly with kids in tow which cuts down the commute and makes it feasible as a weekender.
2. Cash - may want to think about converting into Euros before the General Election; if its a hung parliament Sterling will tank.
3. The problem with being close to the sea, is that so do many others which pushes up prices and limits availability and you can get more for your money buying inland.
4. Don't totally dismiss renting it out, if only for a few weeks a year, as it generates an income to help pay for the upkeep.

Some good suggestions from others already, but how about looking further inland from any of the Costas?

Cyprus is always nice, but maybe a bit far on a plane for a long weekend style.

What about a Baleric island? Majorca (away from Shagaluf) is most beautiful.

Lodge in the Alps? Skiiing in winter, walking / biking / lounging in summer?

Pollenca, Northern Mallorca. 2 hour flight to Palma. 45 mins in the car up a new motorway.

It is a stunning old town, with nice Tapas bars / restaurants etc less from 10 mins drive to the beach & is absoluting nothing like the "Shag-aluf" image of Mallorca. If you want to be right on the sea, there is Puerto Pollenca (about 3 km away), but this isn't quite as nice IMO.

We'll be buying somewhere in Pollenca in the next 2 - 3 years.

Been looking at this too, different airport criteria but I'm looking at flying to either Pisa or Florence. Been looking at places in the Pisa, Florence, Siena area as it's all less than 2 hours from the airport. Looked at the coast around Viareggio etc at first as it was a train ride from Pisa airport but it didn't have a good feel to it so looking further inland now.

Steve, my parents had a place in the Algarve for 25 years. Love the place smile

FWIW, the western end is quieter and IMO a much nicer place to be. Give me a phone if you want location specific details smile

Louis.
