Interesting topic this, as I've seen extremes on both scales.
I worked at a company that contracted everyone to 35hrs/week, sounds a pretty good deal and easy enough. However, most of the guys there were doing 50-60+hrs a week in order to get the jobs done. And bearing in mind they got paid no overtime and no bonus it seemed a bit strange. All the employees seemed to be in the mentality that there were competing against each other for who was working the longest hours.. All seemed very odd, especially as the company wasn't doing anything particular unique/clever. And from what the guys told me the pay wasn't even that great, they could happily earn more working a flat 35hr week in a contract role with me.
On the other side of the coin, I've got a couple of very good contractors I use that I tend to only give ~10hrs/week maximum to. This usually means they are with me on Monday morning to setup the other contractors with a weeks work and sort out any problems and then they return on Friday afternoon to run through the weeks worth and prepare for Monday. It works surprisingly well, suits these guys as well as they can still happily fit in a standard 37.5hr contract into the week - although the ridiculous rates they demand would mean they could quite happily get by with the 10hrs only!
Would be interesting to here from people who do lots of addition overtime (unpaid) as to why they feel the need to do it??

Officially 50 hours a week plus time spent replying to emails and talking to customers on my blackberry. Also 8 or so hours a week travelling.
That is actually an easy job in the motor trade, when I worked in a main dealer I did 8.30-7 Monday to Friday, 9-6 Saturday 11-5 Sunday with a day off in the week (supposedly) so 57 hours before you started working your day off etc, plus 12 hours a week travelling, it added up.

It varies, i'm contracted for 42 hours minimum/week blanced over a 16week rolling rota and because of that it is easier to give the monthly hours figures as i keep track of those more than the weekly figures.

However i only have 172hours for may at the moment and that doesn't look like it will go up. Oh and although i only get a flat rate, i get paid for everything i work. An 80+ hour week isn't uncommon, but having most of the next week off is pretty common as well.
