Hi guys

Going to look at a 156 Sportswagon tomorrow and would like your input on what to look out for.

Its a 2001 1.8 manual with 74k miles on the clock. The chap says its got a full service history with the next service due at 84k miles. It has had the cambelt replaced at 60k miles.

Any common problems to look out for?

Jesus, not another 156 thread!!

Personally I hate the things and would get a 328 instead.

Yay, another 156 thread biggrin...:P

What year was the belt changed? it should be changed every 36k or 3 years - whichever comes first.

Oil Level - Make sure the oil is nice and high, if below min - walk. Simply not worth the risk.

Front upper wishbones/bushes - If there is any squeaking from the front then most likely the upper wishbones, if knocking then anything from the ARB to drop links (all quite cheap to fix really).

Check service history, also on the SW I think the rear dampers can be one of two types with the self levelling ones being quite expensive to replace.

Check all the usuals and enjoy biggrin

What spec is it?, 2001 would be an early Sportwagon... note only one S please wink

156's of that era were the first to carry the Turismo, Lusso or Veloce model names, to replace the old Sport Pack system.

Check the history as best you can, many were imported at that sort of time, this isn't necessarily a bad thing though, it depends where they came form as to what spec they had.

Great cars, but the 2.0TS had a bit more grunt than the 1.8, so i'd seek one of those out, in Veloce with leather or Sport Pack 3.

Veloce's came with the Novomat adjustable suspension if I recall.
