I like 944s but their age puts me off using one as a daily driver. If there is a modern day equivalent what would it be? (please don't say 968).

Panamera, ok its got 5 doors instead of 3, but its in the same sort of market segment and is of similar cost taking inflation into account.

350 or 370Z ? Both are front engine, rear wheel drive coupes.

Don't you mean 928? The 944 was a cheap Porsche below the 911. If anything, the Cayman is the equivalent entry level car.

Nissan 350Z. Powerful, RWD, not-terribly-interesting engine note, quicker than you might think though.

Or if you need 4 seats, a BMW late E46 330 Coupé. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2010...

I'd have thought the Panamera is more of the 928 of today, even in styling you can see some nods. The two are both GT cars with big V8s and lots of horses!!

Looking at the cost side of things, panamera is £3k less than a 997, yes the cayman and boxster are the entry level cars..............which was a position the 924 and 914 before it occupied.

IMHO

Entry level - 914 = Boxster/Cayman (as Boxster isnt a 4 seater)
Mid level coupe - 944 = Panamera (944 was anything but cheap when new, somewhere around £50k without options in todays money)
911 = 911
top of range - 928 = Panamera turbo / TBA 3 door version

I'd say so. Much cheaper than the budget. BUT the fuel costs will burn the rest of that budget hehe

Surely an XKR would be a better buy, no?

hehe oh yes

Mind you, a £5k RX-8 + £10k of petrol is a lot of motoring. At least a month anyway hehe

Why not just run a 944 and see how you get on? smile They are great fun and fine to be run as dailys, though mine now isn't (only because I bought an MGB for that, on an impluse!)

Not really any modern altenative having had a few 944's and a 968 & 928 but cant think of a similar modern (£15k) alternative, have owned a few of the cars listed above as alternatives eg 330 ci, 350z etc - none come close to what a 944 can do.

M3 E46 probably closes thing but is a 2 door saloon not a sports coupe.

Such a shame Porsche stopped doing rwd front engined cars after the 968.

I ran my 944 as my daily driver for the first 18 months I had it. It did 38K in that time & got relayed once for a puncture because I'd put later brakes on it & the space saver didn't fit no more. crysilly
Otherwise I did a 6K oil & filter on it & it needed a clutch slave. And the rest was standard servicing some by me some by indies. Around 38PPM I think.
Nothing is as practical, or as harmonised in handling.
