My wife has a car on 2 year contract non-maintenance hire deal due to go back in July. She got it early July 08.

It's a Ford Focus, which has 1 year or 12,500 mile service intervals.

Last service was late July 2009(slightly late against the 1 year rule).

So the question is, if she hands it back in early July 2010, does she need to get the second annual service done before she hands it back or not? It'll be 2 years old, but it will be less than a year since the last one.

Phone the leasing company.

I'd get it done personally...

Your gamble really. But they may charge you for it and they may use a dealer that charges a lot more than yours too.

There must be a company who took I over??

I don't know of any funders that have gone bust, maybe the broker has.

Yep, it'll be the broker.

The leasing company will be named on your document, PM me with who it is and I'll let you know their end of contract policy if it's one I deal with.

Don't ask the leasing company unless you have to.

Aye - the broker is bust, it was Blackberry Vehicle solutions. The upstream company is Lombard.

I've wondered this too.

I'm hoping to hand mine back a few months early and also avoid the last service - it'll only be approx 8 months since its last service. I was planning on phoning the company to find out.

Please keep us all informed as to how you get on.

I gave a car back with the last service overdue, didn't get charged.

I might have got lucky, i just took the risk.

agents come and go frequently, but your contract from what you say is with Lombard. It is a condition of your contract to get it serviced on time and keep it in good shape, fair wear and tear notwithstanding. They want decent cars back to sell on, because that is what their business is based on. So, they will seek recompense not only for the cost of the service, but also for what the chargeback policy says about possible damage you have done to the car by not having it serviced on time - in total considerably more than just getting it serviced. I am not saying it is right (although to be honest, it probably is - and if I ran a lease co I certainly would do it this way), but I am saying that they deal in thousand of these contracts every month. They know the game, and its their ball, and finally the service history is just about the easiest thing to check after handback. They _might_ miss it, but to be honest I would bet strongly on you getting pulled up on this.

That's what I reckon too. Will get it done just before I hand it back, I doubt they wouldn't notice. I agree that they will end up charging more than the cost of the service.

That said, my missus once had a Fiat Punto on finance, didn't even service it at all (wtf? her family don't seem to understand the concept of 'servicing a car'), handed it back without even the documents and got away with it. I was astounded it even still ran.
