Having just got my 17 year old learner driver son a lovely 1.0 litre VW Polo, Im looking at trying to get affordable insurance, any ides ? would it be worth joining a VW club ?? had quotes up to £2,800.
What planet are some insurers on ,
Any piston headmembers in the trade, and be willing to quote for him as a named driver ???
Help, he's driving me mad as the cars on the drive and cant be used yet.

1.0 litre polo and £2800? where do you live?! Baghdad?

I would say just keep trying different insurers on comparison sites, then go to the insurer directly, on the phone, and ask about it.
Good luck.

Possibly he could get a job as an introduction to the real world? Though £2,800 sounds bloody expensive - bad postcode?

For the time being, get yourself insured on it, then get a learner policy with Collingwood Learners. It's about £100 a month.
http://www.collingwoodlearners.co.uk/
(there's another company that runs a similar/identical service for the sameish price, can't remember the name for the life of me)

That's what I used when learning, not sure if that could be considered fronting though - if you're never using the car, only him. You'd have two policies on the car though, don't know how that would affect it.

It's a provisional policy, so as soon as he passes it's invalid and you have to dig out the vaseline and the yellow pages.

There's a reason they've just been placed into administration wink

Extremely Poor Management?

From what I've heard, Quinn Insurance was/is still profitable despite the risks they were willing to take on!

Oh, and another vote for collingwood here

Their accounts were far from accurate - not enough in reserve to cover liabilities, no idea if they were trading profitably or not.

I'd be amazed if they were (in fact most of the market isn't), we've had to cancel a few customers policies that we couldn't get replaced elsewhere for less than double!

Same here. It's clearly a bit of an odd "niche" I fit into. Now 30, but have insured with them since University and they've always been substantially cheaper than the opposition. Even now, they were almost half the price of the next cheapest....

If you just want learner driver insurance (i.e. for use when he is on a provisional licence) there are a couple of companies who offer a short term pay as you go type policy - http://www.provisionalmarmalade.co.uk/ and http://www.collingwoodlearners.co.uk/

Your looking at a maximum of about £99 a month, and no yearly contracts or direct debit etc.

They no longer offer insurance, for some reason prices for younger drivers has gone up since them ceasing to trade..

Its not fronting, the young driver becomes the main driver on the car when you get insurance that way. You would only need an additional policy if someone else wanted to drive the car.

Does anyone have a Promotion Code for Collingwood insurance that I could use for my son to get cheaper learner driver insurance?.

Thanks

Might I suggest you don't fill all the forms in with CAPITAL LETTERS FOR most of it?

Insurers don't charge young drivers a fortune out of spite. It's a business, and if an insurer quotes £2800 it's because that's the premium their statistics tell them they need to charge to hopefully turn a profit.

They have a right to charge whatever they like, just as the punter has the right to say "no thanks, I'll take my business elsewhere."

But has it occured to anyone that if they are all charging a fortune, maybe that's because a fortune is the correct rate for the risk.

If a 90 year old wanted life insurance, I'd guess he'd pay a lot more than a 17 year old. Rocket science it ain't.
