I was sat outside a neighbour's house this evening (just north of York) having a BBQ, when around 9pm my wife said 'look at that'. We all looked up and saw a bright orange light, that appeared to be burning, moving extremely quickly across the sky from East to West. It was too fast to be an aircraft and too slow to be a shooting star. We watched if for over 30s at it streaked westward making no sound whatsoever and leaving no contrails.

Did anyone else see it, more importantly, does anybody know what is was?

Oh, we were all sober at that point before you ask!

It may have been one of those chinese lanterns. They look like they travel very fast once they get up high, must be something to do witht the perspective. In the local paper we had the local nutters claiming of UFOs.

At first we all thought it was a lantern but to be honest it appeared to be very high up and moving very quickly, it didn't seem to waver or change course as I would expect a lantern to do if it were being blown by the wind.

I'm not with the UFO brigade at all but it did seem odd. Ho hum, must have been the sausages - black on the outside, pink on the inside.

Obviously! Otherwise he wouldn't be asking if he could ID it.

I'll go for Chinese lantern. I don't know if something was happening last night as I saw some, as did a friend in London.

UFO Lantern.

First time I saw one in Thailand I thought it was a plane. Then it landed in the sea.

That's another vote for a lantern, especially as Weather Underground

reports last night's wind as from the East at 12mph

Hmmm, wind from the East at 12 mph - that would be it then!

None of us had ever seen one before and it was funny trying to work out what it was, which of course we couldn't. My how everyone will laugh when I see them today. :arse:

Because any flying object you can not identify IS a UFO, until you figure out what it really is. smile

It's either a plane, cloud, or Chinese lantern.

Never unidentified.

It's like if I look in my sink and say there's an unidentified item in the washing up bowl among the suds.
It's not really though as it's likely to be a plate, cup, fork, spoon etc.

UFO's by there very essence do not exist as it must be something identifiable otherwise it would go like this;
"Whats that in the sky?"
"Dont know"
"Must be a UFO then"
"No. I just said I don't know, but it's probably a fking Chinese lantern"

hehe

What about if alien space ships look exactly like chinese lanterns?

Just because you didn't realise it was a UFO doesn't mean it wasn't :P

Until you ascertain which one of those it is it remains unidentified.

You have a really unique understanding of the word "unidentified" wink

I think I know where you're coming from though. If someone saw an alien spaceship flying around above them, and saw little green men peering out of the windows, and even if the spaceship had "Martian Heavy Industries Type 87 Interplanetary Transport - Clipper Olympus" written on the side in large, well lit letters, they'd probably still say they saw a UFO.
