Hello everyone, I am about to buy a 1999 Z3.

I'd like to get a wind deflector but don't know if I should go for the solid perspex type or the mesh foldaway one. I'd appreciate any views you have on the more suitable / most effective choice.

Many thanks,

SteveO

Hi I have a Z3 2.8 with the mesh deflector as standard, it works well, hardly any wind buffeting even driving in excess of the speed limit.

I have a Z4 with a solid deflector - clips between the roll hoops in use, and is stored on the inside of the boot lid. Looks good and does not rattle - and can be seen through. I have seen a few Z4's with the roll-up deflector and would imagine that they are difficult to get good tension on (so not such a clear view in the mirror), and probably flap about a bit when "pressing on" wink

A 50/50 split so far!

With regard to the solid deflector, can you tell me how it's fitted to the inside of the boot - I'm guessing it's a BMW part; I was looking to pick up a non-BMW one from Ebay for about £100

Cheers,

Steve

On the Z4, there are clips/slots fixed to the inside edge of each roll hoop and similar slots attached to thin brackets on the bottom of the boot lid. Doesn't take up any space - and does not make the stored deflector vulnerable to damage with a full boot.

I assume mine was either a factory-fit extra or a dealer accessory (my car was subject to a full blown raid on the options list by the first owner), and as such all brackets must be part of the kit.
