What a load of b
ks!
Minimum learning period of a year! I know people who have been learning for years and still can't pass their test!
Minimum engine size of 1.4! Hold on to your 106 Rallyes, they'll be worth a fortune!
I hate this countries attitude towards young drivers.
Get more Traffic Police on the roads and strike fear into every young driver, instant ban for a few months if caught doing something silly, having your car taking off you is hell!

I heard this mentioned on the radio a few weeks ago but haven't been able to find any recent information on it which is worrying - I wouldn't put it past the government slipping something like this through.
The 1,400cc limit is absolutely freaking pointless. 99% of young drivers cannot afford a car with much more than 1,400cc engine anyway, the 1% of us that do pay out of the arse until it bleeds and as a result drive like angels in the fear that we might stack it and send our premiums into space.
I smoked around days after passing my test in a 220BHP 5 Series BMW and guess what? I didn't kill myself. I daily drove a stripped out 2000cc 200BHP per tonne Hot Hatch with a reputation of killing driving at random for 6 - 7 months without so much as a parking ding.
My first year of driving hasn't even offically finished yet and I'm going out to look at a 276BHP 2.5L Twin Turbocharged nutter Jap car today with the view of buying it and using it as my daily, and I PROMISE you that I'll drive it far better and far safer than the other apprentice drives his 98BHP automatic focus...
You're either a s
t driver or your not, the test does nothing to filter out the s
t ones, neither does high insurance. You could probably train a monkey to pass the test with no minors, but on the road on your own it is a completely different ball game, regardless of what sized engine is under your foot. Don't get me wrong, I'm far from the greatest driver in the world, but I understand that a motor car is a f
king lethal weapon and treat it as such. I doubt most test passers understand this. I like parts of it (independant driving sounds like it could be a good idea) and a longer test, while perhaps not to anybody's liking, gives more experience behind the wheel in a pressurising situation.
However, the minimum learning length thing and engine size is b
ks. My mum's 1 litre Micra can still do 70 in a 30 - granted it'll take ages to get to 70 - but I see no point in restricting engine sizes. Oh well, shove more kids in RX-8s
I did an intensive course because I can't afford the time (and probably not the money either!) to take lessons for a whole year. Get into a car, drive for a week, pass my test, off I go. Job done. No mess, no fuss.
Edit: I like the way there's no mention of motorways in the revised test. I was watching Traffic Cops earlier and they were moaning how young drives always end up pasting themselves over several lanes of motorway because they're inexperienced - why not cover it on the test? They're only the most important roads in the country.

Driver attitude test - This is currently going through its second phase of testing and is very likely to be introduced. You'll be asked questions such as "You smashed into a parked car while driving, should you report it or drive off?" with the idea being that this will stop people with bad attitudes from getting a licence.
If you answer yes to this, you don't have the wrong attitude, you're an imbecile!A bit like the immigration form that asks "Are you a terrorist?"

I know its stupid, the only way you get experience on motorways now is doing pass plus, which gives pretty much you no benefit from cheaper insurance nowadays anyway. If they change the pass plus scheme also like it says, it means i pretty much wasted my time with it since it will be obsolete.Edited by sebhaque on Sunday 25th April 12:44

Yep - Like I said, I know that I've got absolutely LOADS to learn and to be honest, I think that is the point. I passed my test with zero minors a year ago and haven't had an accident, but I understand that this means bugger and and that there is far more to safe driving than passing your test, and that realistically I'll be "learning to drive" for the rest of my life.
The problem is MOST of the young test passers think that they are Hot s
t because they have a Pink license in their wallet. Funnily enough though 2 guys I know that don't give they are the gods gift to the road are fellow Hardcore petrol heads like myself and either drive interesting car (150BHP kit car) or race competitively.I hope to god that I never have to learn a lesson the hardway, that is why I keep driving like a dick saved for track days and will be going on plenty of car control days with my new purchase so I learn my limits and the limits of my car in a safe place. I'm not saying I won't crash because of it, but it helps, right?
Honestly, I learned far more about driving commuting to work on my own for a week and hooning about some cones than I did in my 20 odd hours of lessons.

Weather this is true or not, it does not change that a lot of the bad driving is already on the roads.
Yes Car enthusiasts will 'tend' to be better drivers so will be fine in a 200bhp nutter car, a lot of younger drivers are loons.
The key is driver education. What is the point of highly training new drivers when the current standard of driving is so low, and getting worse by the day. They learn to pass the test, and then learn to drive at the current poor standard.
If the general standard of driver education was much higher then there will be less accidents. However typical of this government it is rule to the lowest common denominator.
FYIW when I passed I had a 1.2 60bhp clio. Which I drove flat out everywhere. Extremely stupid and very dangerous I was lucky not to kill myself or anybody else. Racing on road was common place. I am not proud, but I did it. If they limit all new drivers to less than 1400cc they will all drive like nutters everywhere.

The problem does not lie within their driving abilities. They have passed a test to prove they are up to the standards required to drive safely on the roads.
It is all about attitude, I've only been driving since '05 so being a t
t behind the wheel is still fresh in my mind. Most young male drivers see their cars and their driving as an extension of themselves.
Give a prick with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove a car and he will drive like one. Give someone with their head screwed on a car and chances are they will drive with at least some consideration for others safety.
You will never change the attitude of these people, the next best thing is to counter act it. Policing followed by education is probably the best method.
There needs to be more Traffic Police on the roads, I know you can't keep an eye on every driver, but if there was more of a Police presence on the roads, they may live in fear of being pulled over and adjust their driving accordingly.
Add to this an instant ban within the first year of driving, hefty fine and some sort of driving like a t
t awareness course would probably be more use than making them take a 10 minute longer test!

The 1 in 5 killed or seriously injured must be absolute bull crap, I only know 1 person out of about 400 who learnt to drive and died afterwards and only a hand full who were injured in crashes (not seriously). I'm guessing they included whip lash claims in this statistic.
Some of the worst drivers i knew and know are the ones who drive very small engined cars, the ones who have larger engined vehicles (mercs, audis, bmws, landrovers) have on the whole been much safer drivers.

It really is changing - a mate of mine who's a driving instructor confirmed this. I can't believe that statistic, though! 1 in 5 new drivers killed or seriously injured within twelve months? That's horrendous!
It depends what field of people they are taking that statistic from.If they take a group of 5 lads and one of them is dead within 12 months, there is the 20%. If they take the full cross section of young drivers I would suspect it will be considerably lower.
I heard some time ago that the average cost of a death on the road is £1m (police, fire, ambulance, road closure, investigation, payout, etc etc.) if that was the case then the insurance premiums for people that age would be £200k min.
