07 520d manual- is vibrating gear stick & engine normal?

Had a play in a 07 520d m sport 20k mileage yesterday, a few stange things
- Engine bay was relatively dirty, noticed the front grills are large so assuming normal due to this? and been sitting a while at the dealers too
- Started her up and the gear stick in neutral had excessive vibration, the engine itself was moving more than I am used to as well. Wear at 20k for engine mounts would be little and gear change were fine so is this unusual or a characteristic of diesals?

I've driven a few E46 320Ds that vibrate like crazy at idle. I phoned the parts department of my local BMW dealer (Chandlers, Brighton) and they said they very rarely sell them

So I suspect it's a characteristic of the car
